Changing Gearbox Oil help

Featured Replies

Hi,

My car nearly done 100k miles and requires a gearbox oil change. Which is the best gearbox oil for my car and how many litres shall I order? Also is there a picture/video guide showing how to do this?

My car is a 2006 manual Octavia II 1.6 petrol

Much appreciated,

Cheers,

Can you contact a local TPS they can tell you what your car needs and how much you'll need. Gearbox oil is quite expensive though but worth it.

Great, who are TPS? Are they like kwik fit?

Trade parts specialists. They supply genuine Audi/VW/Seat/Skoda parts to the trade. My local tps does sell to the public but i think some don't. Worth phoning to check they'll tell you either way.

I used the VAG gear oil from the Skoda dealer. It's mineral for the 5 speed box and synthetic for the 6 speed box in general as far as I remember but I think there is a code stamped on the bottom of the gearbox that they use to get the correct oil for your box.

Both oils are the same spec.

Just had the gearbox oil changed on my 2.0pd Scout with the 6 speed kxu gearbox. The correct oil for it was G052171A2.  5 speed boxes need different fluid. I needed 3L as the capacity was 2.3 cost was £68 from TPS.

Have the clutch bled as well makes a massive difference.

make sure they know about updated quantity of gearbox oil !!!

my 02Q HLV used to have 2.5l and now is 2.8l if I recall correctly. Oil lab confirmed excessive wear of gearbox due low oil level !!!

I use thicker LiquiMoly 75W-90 though...normal gearbox oil us 75W-80 I think

Anyone can advise?

I think it's the mineral stuff but get the code off the bottom off the gearbox and Skoda Technical department can advise.

The dealer got me the wrong stuff initially and had to get the correct stuff for me.

Ok to summarise my understanding so far you can only get gearbox oil from TPS or Skoda dealership? Can I buy it online?

And also do I have to jack the car up to get the code under the gearbox to find out which gearbox oil it uses? Is there any other way to find out without going underneath the car?

Also how many litres it takes?

Finally when draining the oil from the gearbox will I be able to tell the remaining life or current condition of my gearbox?

I find Fuchs much more straightforward and not a rip off price   either use their web site or I can THOROUGHLY  recommend OPIE oils great service and advice

Drop an email to [email protected] including your registration number or VIN number, and what you want.  I'd imagine he will easily find the correct part number and quantitiy.

See here:

Genuine parts, delivered to your door at very competitive prices.  I've bought from Michael several times and it's always a pleasure.
