Retro fit of cruise control to 4x4?

Featured Replies

How much will a garage charge me or can you buy the bits and do it yourself? Any ideas let me know.

I knew to this what does DBW mean?

Just curious, would this work on a 2001 110bhp elegance?

Also where would you gain access to a VAG-COM diagnostic tool to switch on the cruise control?

you can get it fitted for about £150 alternatively you could buy my VAG COM from me for £65

DBW

drive by wire ie not a conventional throttle cable.

How valuable is your time? Fitting includes removal of the steering wheel, stalk (of course!), lower drivers side dash, wipers and scuttle plus though you can buy the wiring 'loom' to go from stalk to fuse box, you'll need a diy cat 5 style job from there to the ecu plug. Not the easiest first time thru me thinks. I paid my money and watched a professional at work!

How much did it cost & was it a main dealer?

Noodles.

Had mine done by big K on this site, it's not a job for the faint hearted.

Look him up in the members section, well worth it mate!

Another vote for "Big K" here, he did my old car to.

As long as the car is DBW' date=' which your's should be, you can buy the bits.

Plenty of info around on the net for DIY stuff.

Added it to my 2001 Elegance ths weekend, using the instructions on the golfmk4 site. Took about 4 hrs (although 1.5 of those was spent trying to get the wiper arms off!) it's not difficult, just takes a bit of time and nerves to take the airbag off!

All the parts you need etc are listed on the site (just a stalk & loom no Cat5 needed) cost me about £65 from vagparts.co.uk

You can also enable it on the ECU with the Freeware version of VAGCOM - just a case of getting a cable of e-bay for around £15

Good luck if you decide to do it!

Unlike the TDi, the 1.8T lacks the necessary wiring between the fusebox and ECU and hence needs a extra loom fitting. This makes fitting more difficult and time-consuming. I know this because I watched big k fit mine!

Exactly right Denis. All is detailed in the links I provided above as well as the option to buy a somewhat expensive ready made 'link' cable.

There you go then, Big K it's just got to be.

I did mine myself and didn't find it particularly difficult, however I know for some people it's a bit too much to take on, especially as a first attempt at DIY on your car. If you have any doubt then pay the relatively small cost for Big K or the likes to fit it for you.

Of sorts - I'm another happy BigK customer. Get in touch and all will be revealed!
