Second Yeti - TPM/Winter Wheels

Featured Replies

Just taken delivery of our second Yeti (1.4 TSI L&K), bought to replace our other car, so we now have 2 Yetis on the drive.

I need to replace the summer tyres on my original Yeti and was thinking of putting Vector 4 Seasons on and using the winter wheels/tyres on the new Yeti in the Autumn.

The new one has TPM, the winter wheels don't have sensors, so when I swap to them, will I need to change any settings on the Maxidot to switch off the TPM for the winter?

Do any of the wheels you have have sensors, and what kind of sensors, or is the car what has the sensors?

Just fit the wheels / tyres, set the pressures and reset the TPMS.

If you have a Winter Tyre Speed Warning activated de-activate it, or set to a speed warning where it might mean losing your licence if you exceed that speed.

The Yeti TPM system does not have sensors but uses the ABS system to monitor wheel rotation, and senses when one is out of synch with the others.

When you fit new wheels or tyres you should press and hold the TPM button on the lower dash for about 10 seconds, as described in the Handbook.

The Winter Tyres section in the Maxidot display is to set a speed warning only, since some winter tyres, especially those fitted with studs have a maximum speed limit

Thanks, I'd just assumed there were sensors in the tyre valves, I've owned two other cars with TPM (neither were Skodas) and both of these had sensor valves fitted in the tyres, which I'd assumed was standard - How does the Yeti TPM system work then?

The wheels do not have any sensors on them, the TPMS works off the ABS sensors

Just a small point on the 'Winter Tyre Warning'.

It is there because there are countries including some in Europe that require a 'Warning Sticker' or Warning Massage in vehicles fitted with Winter Tyres.

As stated, the ABS sensors are constantly monitoring individual wheels speeds.  These data are used for braking and traction control systems but also for the TPMS.  If a tyre goes soft the effective radius of that wheel reduces, hence it will spin slightly faster than the others to cover the same distance.  The ECU spots this and flags the warning.  When you replace tyres or fix the puncture you should reset the TPMS so it relearns each wheels 'normal' status.

Of course this only picks up on soft tyres when moving - it can't spot a flat tyre before you drive off (which a pressure sensor-based system can).  Nor can it give individual tyre pressure readings nor, indeed, can it spot if you have all four tyres over-under inflated by the same amount.

^ ^ think I need to refit my winters if warning massages are available!!  ; - )))
