Remove chrome bonnet lip

Featured Replies

Hi,

anyone removed the chrome lip from the leading edge bonnet?

It seems to have a white clip and a dark clip, one of which looks to be attached to the trim piece itself and the dark gray/black appears to be a separate bracket of some kind the chrome trim

is attached to. Do I need to remove all of these?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

steve

Hi I did this a while ago, from what I can remember there is a nut / bolt to undo somewhere in the vacinity of the badge. all clips pop out and need to be transferred to the ned chrome part if replacing. IIRC they slide in and out of the removed chrome housing. Below is the best image that I can find for the assembly, easy job less than 5 minutes, I used a bit of vaseline on the clips on reassembly, they do need a firm push, I'm a bit paranoid about rust, too many Mini's and Metro's in the past!!! Hope this helps.

You are right to be wary of rust, early MkII Superb's (including my 2011 model) are well known for the grill rubbing on the paintwork. The issue being it takes a good few years for the rust to appear.

See here for my story...

What's the best advice to prevent the rust occurring in the first place ?

I don't think the cause is conclusive.

Some think it is an issue from the production line i.e. when the grill is fitted there are some rough edges / sharp points which penetrate the paintwork.

Some think it is movement of the grill during the cars life rubbing away the paint.

I didn't see behind mine as it was repaired under warranty, however if you look at the photo's in the link above you should see where to look to see if it has started creeping out from behind the grill.

If it's easy to remove/inspect maybe worth it. I have an 11 plate and it will be having a hard motorway life about 20k
