My Fabia ICE install diary.

Featured Replies

Well, the last of my kit arrived today, so think I'm going to keep an install diary and maybe turn it into a how to with lots of pics if wanted... Will be taking lots regardless

I have:

  • Pioneer DEH-7700MP head unit
  • Pioneer iPOD interface
  • Rainbow SLC 265 Kick component speakers
  • RE Audio SE12v4 subwoofer
  • Genesis Profile Sub amp
  • Genesis Profile 4 amp.

It will be a really "sound quality" orientated set up - but the beauty of the RE is that it will drop low and loud should the need arise ;)

I believe in 10% kit, 90% installation, so it will all be done nice and slowly, carefully thought out using quality cabling etc throughout. The only give away will be the tweeters in the a-pillars

So the plan for tomorrow is - MDF false floor to contain the amps and the wiring, get it carpeted and pop the sub in :D

Install should be nice when finished.........

Front components - are you using 4 channel amp on mids and highs?(Make sure you soundprrof the front doors, makes such a difference to bass upfront)Big imrovement to front soundstage if you are, and try experimenting with different positions for the tweeters.Blue tac them on pointing towards windscreen to find best position.

Look foward to the post with all the pics!

Jay - nice to meet you at C&F meet!

Lummox will be assisting with the sound deadening - I have a bulk pack of Brown Bread to go in. The tweeters will eventually be grafted into the a-pillars and retrimmed in leather, but will of course use the patented blu-tac mount to get the soundstage just right first ;)

The speakers are the "kick" version - extra lush in the mid-bass

Made excellent progress today. All the wiring is in, headunit in and the sub and amp working! The lower floor is done - so a good day.

Still lots to do though.

Looking good mate, looking good.

Hi,

Just wondering where abouts your going to/have put the ipod, on display or hidden away?? I'm asking because i have the exact same head unit and adapter in my saxo atm and i'm planning on transferring it to my vRS when it arrives.

Also have u had any problems with you pioneer HU? mine has suddenly decided to start fully illuminating the display every so often then going back to normal after a few seconds... no idea what has caused to do this as it didn't do it until i had the battery a month or so ago.

Oh and your install looks like it's coming along nicely... I'd love to be able to have a sub, but I can't lose that amount of boot space.

Later

Martin

Looking good Tom

Me and you have done it in opposite orders, my boots completely finished, but not a sniff of cables yet lol

Going to do my diary on completion :)

Nice pictures, and nice kit!

Can't wait to see the finished thing!

You've got the 'demo' function turned on.

With the key in the ignition but the headunit turned off, press pre-set button 5 and it should beep. That should stop it.

If that doesn't work, try the same thing again, but with button 6 ;)

I can never remember which one it is :o

THANKs vRS_Si :D

I had "reverse mode" switched on (button 5)... silly me, i must of missed that in the manual :tilt:

Button 6 is the demo... which also tells ya what 5 and 6 do...

Glad thats sorted now as it was starting to get on my nerves especially driving at night, now all i need is my new vRS to arrive....

Thanks for the positive comments guys. I still have lots of work to do, but I'm dead chuffed with it so far.

The first problem was with the available room for cabling behind the head unit - I cut the left hand support bar out to give a little bit more room.

The sub sounds great - so versatile. Its so tunefull and sweet sounding under normal listening, but then is so loud and drops so low when you want it too - awesome.

I am somewhat undecided on where to go with the boot install though. At the moment I can access the spare quite easily, and would like this to remain the case.

I have 2 choices though - Do I create a "stepped" boot floor where it is contoured over the amps? Or do I have one big false floor that is totally flush and the sub can sit on top of that? :rubchin:

Also, i'm considering some perspex covers over the amps, maybe getting them etched with the Genesis logo, but on the other hand I want to keep them stealth...

Any thouhts?

Roll on Saturday, when I intend to install the front speakers, sound deaden the front doors and hoepfully get the system "set up". Then the following Saturday will be finishing the boot build and getting it all trimmed. Lovely.

The iPOD adapter is installed under the false floor of the glovebox, and I feel this location is ideal. However, I'm not totally happy with the adapter, as menu scrolling is terribly slow, which is a shame... I think I want a Becker unit to replace it!

hhmm.. sounds like the perfect place (well out of sight) how difficult is it to put in there? Yeah I found the navigation of the iPod to be abit on the slow side, but it's better than using one of those cassette adapters!!!

sweeeeet!... and sooo envious!

Personally I like the install a few other ppl on here have done, where the false floor covers the whole boot floor with a cutout to go around the sub. I guess this comes down to how you want the install to look... :)

tom, whats the ipod itergration like? I've got the alpine ipod kit...

I took lots of photos of the install - can do a "How To" on installing the interface in the glove box if required.

It sounds as good as cd, but the display only shows 8 characters, and the menu scrolling is mind-numbingly slow. A little disappointing tbh, but as I just leave it on "shuffle" in the "My Top Rated" playlist, so really shouldn't complain.

I'm still undecided with the boot floor. Will have to experiment methinks.

Looking good so far!

Looking forward to your experiences putting the components in.

- I have a bulk pack of Brown Bread to go in.

Wont that go mouldy & smell ? ;)

Well, made a little bit more progress with it. All the wiring is done, just need to get some terminals for the 8AWG to get a tidy connection with the amps.

The supports for the left hand side are all secured and in place, with plenty of gaps for air flow. The sub in in place - decided to mount it on its back, and the false floor will have a hole cut in it so the sub can be recessed in. smile.gif The sub is supported on some blocks so it can sit flush against the side of the boot.

I'll probably cut a hole in the floor too, so the stale air can escape through the back of the car like Skoda intended. ;) (thanks for the reminder jonny boy)

tres impressive, been following on ta!

Well, finished the boot build tonight, well chuffed with the result.

I made a shelf thing for the sub to sit on to allow it to sit flush with the side of the boot.

IMG_0350-1.jpg

The sub sits nice and securely.

IMG_0351-1.jpg

The right hand side will have a little strap on it, creating a cubby hole for motoring essentials - fluorescent jacket, first aid kit etc.

IMG_0352-1.jpg

The finished product! (Just neet to turn the sub in its box)

On Saturday, the component speakers and sound deadening will be going in!

looks cool. thought it would look worse than that and take up more space. nice one.:D

Looking very neat Tom I'm impressed!

Does look very neat. good job

Cheers everyone, was inspired by Xavs install, so credit to him for his good guide

Whilst I'm happy with the way it looks, I'll rip it all out in the summer, and tidy it all up, using what I have as a template. Just to get it to a really high standard. The boot looks great until you lift up the false floor.

Roll on Saturday...

Very neat indeed - nice job

Looks ace mate  and remarkably similar to mine, although mine looks a bit tatty now :o

Know what you mean about clean/tidy until you lift up the false floor. Spaghetti mess under there :D
