If anyone could offer any advice, it would be much appreciated.  I've also looked on the net about changing this yourself and it seems you can, but I'd like to know for sure if that's true or not.

Yes and it doesn't shows nothing.

Mine had 01598 code. Battery open circuit. Which turned out to be a bad earth
