Questions from a new Yeti Owner

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have recently bought a 2010 Yeti and there are a couple of things I cannot work out even after consulting the great Google Oracle;

1) Fiting a MDI Kit

My Yeti came with a Swing Radio and official Skoda Bluetooth Car Kit but it is unfortunately missing the MDI kit that would allow me to plug in a usb drive containing all my favourite music. I was considering just ripping out the Swing and replacing it with an after-market radio but that would mean losing the Bluetooth Car Kit integration that seems to work very well. Fitting the MDI Kit looks straightforward enough (I'm an IT Engineer by trade) and I think I have found all the parts I would need in this kit:

I found KBPhotos excellent guide that includes retrofitting a MDI Kit but he unfortunately misses out the part about using VCDS to 'tell the car' that the kit has been installed. So...

Question 1 - Is the kit I have found correct and does it include everything I need?

Question 2 - Do I need to have someone use VCDS to change any of the internal car settings in order for the kit to work correctly? (I just have the basic Trip Computer not a Maxidot system).

I've also noticed that playing music from the phone through the Bluetooth Car Kit seems to only come out through one speaker. I'm wondering if it has something to do with there only being one 'Mic' connection to the back of the Radio (see attached pic).

2) MPH Display

While playing with the different display settings I found what appears to be a digital speedo except it doesn't display anything, it just shows

"- - - mph" even when driving (see attached pic). It is not the mandatory km/h display as that replaces the Total Mileage value at the bottom of the display any time the car is moving. So...

Question 3 - If this is a digital speedometer why isn't it working, or if it ISN'T what is it?

So far I like the Yeti a lot; the height and suspension takes Speed Bumps and other crap in the road very easily, and as my previous car was a Golf Mk3 I can see a number of little similarities.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can shed light on these matters.

If all you want is music, have you thought about getting an SD card and using that instead of USB?

The --- mph is a speed warning function. You can set it to 'bong' when you exceed a certain speed.

Large MPH setting needs to be activated, with VCDS.

Thanks for the reply Wardy. The --- MPH Display is indeed a Speed Warning mode which I have now set to a useful value. I originally didn't think the UK Models had the Speed Warning mode which is why I ignored that part of the manual.

The Swing Radio doesn't have a SD Card slot or any front-mounted inputs whatsoever. At the moment I have burnt a CD with all my favourite tracks in MP3s which it plays ok but I can only fit so many MP3s on a CD whereas the USB Stick I used in my previous car has over 20 complete albums and compilations on it.

For the Swing radio, I'm not familiar with that model but I know on some models the SD card slot is located in the glove box? Worth a check.

I presume for the Yeti, the Swing front design is different. This is one in another model, where you can see the blue SD card inserted:

Nice radio but that appears to be a new Swing unit whereas I have the original which looks like this;

Yetis with a SD Card slot in the Glovebox have the optional MDI Kit installed as the big box part of the kit is usually installed behind the Glovebox with the cables sticking out into the Glovebox. I've already checked this so I know I haven't got one, hence my first two questions :-)

OK I see, that's the same version I had in my last Fabia (Mk2 vRS).

That had the MDI kit fitted. So I would say that the only way you're going to be able to use external devices, is to retrofit the MDI kit.

After much consideration I ended up saying Nuts to the Swing Radio and Official Car Kit. I have removed both and replaced them with this;

...which has USB, Bluetooth Car Kit (supporting two phones), DAB Radio and lots of other cool features.

Thanks for the advice though :-)
