Defenders

Featured Replies

I'm having one of my regular silly thoughts.

I quite fancy having a more impractical second car. The beemer is great day to day. But quite often I'm just stuck coz of the little boot. It's saloon and I knew it would on occasion **** me off I bought it with my eyes open.

However it's planted a seed of another car I've always liked. I'm having defender shaped thoughts.

Man logic goes like this -

I have a really big garden and have to go to the dump 6 miles away a lot. I'm also doing the house up and will have to go to the dump and DIY places quite a lot over the next few years.

I've plenty of space to keep a second motor

Although I could get a standard pickup they're a bit big

I'd like something that wouldn't depreciate too badly over a few years.

I won't be doing many miles

I quite like defenders

Therefore a Defender 90 is clearly a good idea.

And a basic one no bling. Military one would do or a well maintain farmers one. Would be happy with a radio and a heater, and actively avoiding electronic extras, AC etc.

I know they're a bit 'unique' to drive

I know they're not all that reliable and although most made are still on the road they're all a bit 'Trigger's broom'.

I know they're expensive to run.

I know if I was really being sensible I could buy a Dacia Logan Estate for half the price and do the same job or a Toyota Hilux

Wondering just how bad my man maths is and what I'd get for about £10k in terms of an unmolested example.

sort of thing = http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201705105299693

  • It hovers around 40 pretty consistently.    If I can resist the urge to boot it it stays at about 42 and I think 45 is on the upper edge of what's possible.  A long run at 60mph you mig

  • Or as I have often discovered:-   "After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true. ..."

  • Have you been passing Autoecosse Burrelton and seeing how the asking prices are going? Time to invest in a good Defender..   PS, If my wee Suzuki Pickup would suit it is for sale.

I had thoughts/dreams of one parked in an old shed in our High Country for wilderness track exploring.

just a dream.

I'd love to own one....... but I don't know why.

They are over priced. Very basic, Noisy and not that big inside.

Depends if you want a "DEFENDER" or a vehicle to throw crap in and not worry about it.

I suppose that it isn't it. I don't know why either. It doesn't really make sense.

I want one too and dont know why!! :D

My justification is all the back roads and rough yards i have to drive through at work.

My man math goes against me everytime i look though... the auld Octy never got stuck anywhere, and the siggy is still too "new" to rough it too much.

Then all the issues you list put me off again for a while :D

I had to look at the first picture closely George, I thought your tracks were a solar panel.

I see your wee Tonka truck when I go into town George. Good try but I think my itch is defender shaped. Though I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who finds them oddly appealing. That've got a bit of character and history I suppose and that's something sorely lacking in most cars.

Try a road test at Autoecosse then there is a basic Defender in your budget or was last week, then if you fancy something more comfortable a mate might still have a good Diesel Discovery for sale that you might like.

**** Defenders. UNIMOG FTMFW

(bit pricey though)

I dunno, If you'd import from Holland or Germany they look better value than a Defender.

I had my welding done on Land Rovers @ the garage in the middle of Edzell by Sam McKay.

Knows his stuff.

I've said to myself for a long time if I was going to get get a proper go anywhere Ute, it'd have to be a Unimog. Another go at the Euromillions tomorrow should see me right.

Next to the shop with a old Land Rover with flowers in it in the middle of town.

Lane down to the Shaky Bridge in Edzell is at the side of the garage.

They say they're in Lethnot Road which is by the church. I've got friends that live just round the corner.

Moot point they're not listing it anyway.

Answer: freedom - to not have to worry about its condition or resale value due to being free to abuse it, is what I hanker for.   I wouldn't want a new one though.

The thing is people can not buy a New Defender.

So even pre Defender Ninety & One Ten's are more desirable.

Series vehicles are very much in demand.

Nearly new and old and abused are being smartened up & some really crap ones and being smartened up as the demand for them is growing & prices

are interesting.

Landies, even Coilies, are appreciating, so they make sense from that angle. I'd suggest a 110 (or 109) pickup if you want load volume rather than an SWB.

They've got a new place at Edzell with this - https://www.gumtree.com/p/land-rover/land-rover-90-defender-2.5d-hard-top/1230031530

Seems overpriced really and the stated mileage is wrong when you look up the MOT. I suppose it's possible it's been sitting in an Army shed for 10yr but who knows. How do you verify the mileage on an ex military vehicle?

I work for the MOD as a mechanic & have worked on Landrovers for nearly 20 years, the one in your link is fitted with the non turbo 2.5d engine & wont have power steering, rear disc brakes etc & will be horrible to drive on road,if you really want a ex military one then you need to find a Landrover defender "wolf" as they have the 300tdi engine, uprated axles, gearbox etc & all round disc brakes but when they come up for sale they seem to be big money, main things to look for are the condition of the chassis & rear crossmember, the front floorpans can rot out as well, the cylinder heads can crack but the 300tdi can cover massive mileages with regular servicing, one good thing about the defender is every bit of it can be replaced if you really wanted to.

Owning a Land Rover is one way to reduce any wealth you may have. They seem to be unique in that they can fall to bits without actually turning a wheel. Military vehicles are worked very hard, even the ones with low mileage will have been ragged to within an inch of it's life, tested to see if it will get air and overloaded. If it breaks the driver is not concerned as they will send it to REME to be fixed. If they have the parts it will be done properly, if not a bodge up will be done.

Unfortunately all Land Rovers are easily to steal and unless you can secure it properly you may come back to find doors etc missing, lots are stolen and broken down for parts too. This will be reflected in the insurance premium too.

As others have said they noisy, cold and cramped with no real road handling as even good ones will weave about.

Fun to drive when they're someone else's, a nightmare to own.

If you've still not been put off then go bang your head off a wall until realise that it's a bad idea. If that doesn't work take a specialist to look at one as there is some serious crap out there that looks good on the outside but everything else is a wrecked.

Sounds like you've had one

Location location location, all CWARD says is true, but then we have a different class of Tin Home Dwellers & we know the risks and the sollutions to reduce those risks, and as to getting a good one you have the Tay 4x4 Club and others that can assist in getting a good one.
