MK Skoda Octavia FDG auto transmission

Recommended Posts

Hi all i have a 2001 2.0 skoda octavia with auto transmission (code FDG) recently it started to slip and then would be ok and then it would slip and would not engage back into gear unless i moved it into 3rd and then back into drive. I changed the fluid and the filter was fine for a while and now its back to slipping and not engaging check the code it gave and it was incorrect gear ratio. is it a sign the valve body is on its way out?? please any one got any ideas

First things first, have you lost any fluid since the change causing a low level to the valveblock?. If the level is still correct, then we would really need the recorded error code to guide you further, but on auto boxes, oil level is far more critical than manuals.

Oh, and excuse my bad manners, welcome to Briskoda.

As you are reasonably certain that the level is correct, then it looks like you will need to seek the services of a transmission specialist, unless you are a skilled tech with the skillset to open the box up.

A bit of info on your recorded code - http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17114/P0730/001840

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I hope it helps in some small way.

Phil.

Could it be TCM or speed sensor related? It only does it when warmed up and seems to be at the high end of the box Lowe end seems to be fine no problems at all when at motorway speeds.

Some of the diagnostic software packages can log live data on the gearbox while driving to see what is happening and when to try to narrow down the problem, I'm not sure if VCDS can do it as I've never had cause to try it, but could be worth sending Ross-Tech an email to check.

Have you tried any of this yet? - http://workshop-manuals.com/skoda/octavia-mk1/power_transmission/automatic_gearbox_01m/self_diagnosis_v.a.g_inspection_service/perform_self-diagnosis/test_table/

Sorry, but you haven't said how mechanically savvy you are, but it is a place to start your tests from, or to get somebody else to do it for you. How many miles has the box done?, I'm guessing a 2001 vehicle will be over 150k?. The manual that I link to asks for donations, but it is voluntary and you can just click the cross to close the little box.

Hope it helps,

Phil
