Ok...so do you know what the embedded data is? Presumably when the map archive is decompressed to the card it is written then? I must admit I don't understand why you can't use a bigger card, other than the Amundsen hardware can't access cards over a certain size?

No, the data is not in the user accessible section of the card which is why reformatting doesn't remove it. A special low level formatting program is needed to access this secure area.

The reason you can't use a bigger card is twofold - firstly, Skoda/VAG don't supply bigger cards with the embedded secure data; and secondly that AFAIK access to the low level formatting program (and the data that would need to be entered) is closely controlled. So you can buy a larger card that works or make it work in an Amundsen as doesn't detect them as having the data in the secure area and hence rejects them as not having map data.

Here's what the SD Card Association say:

Quote

The SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards have a "Protected Area" on the card for the SD standard's security function. The SD Card Formatter does not format the "Protected Area". Please use appropriate application software or SD-compatible device that provides SD security function to format the "Protected Area" in the memory card.

The secure area (which is why they are called Secure Digital or SD cards) is very rarely used, but VAG have chosen to use it.

Ah, ok. This must be where they write the VIN and Amundsen hardware coding data then. I didn't realise they were using protected area functions. Thank you for clearing that up.

Success at last!  Having apparently downloaded and unpacking the update successfully onto an SD card my Columbus kept failing the update.  I tried reformatting the card in smaller clusters and extracting the files onto the card many times.  As a last resort I downloaded the update from the website again and Eureka it worked first time!  I just wonder how it can be that the first download was reported having succeeded and was apparently the same size and content as the second attempt?

Just pleased it's worked but disappointingly there's still no house numbers for many minor roads so my normal, and I bet most UK users method of searching for a location, is either by postcode and street name and number or directly with town, street name and number.  Being prompted for the nearest junction to the target location is useless as most users won't know the nearest junction and anyway it could be a considerable distance from the target - that's why they're using a satnav.  Grrrrrr.
