Nothing sticks

Featured Replies

I have tried to stick a couple of phone holders on the inside of my Yeti but nothing sticks! One one the side of the centre consul and the other on the inside of the door. I have tried 3m the black stuff with a red backing , Gorilla double sided tape and double sided carpet tape but they just fall off  Any help would be appreciated

Hi,

I don't know if the tapes you've tried were thin, but I've used this Halford's tape for holding my dash cam to the windscreen. Because the tape is quite thick, it allowed for sticking the flat camera pad to the curved glass. It's been on since last summer, and even in sweltering direct sun it doesn't show any signs of moving....

Nearly all internal car plastics have a silicone coating which "rejects" most adhesives. To encourage it to stick you need to clean the surface with a degreaser and silicone remover, such as an alcohol pr acrylic wipe.

You may find even following the above advice that they still don't stick, or are at best a bit wobbly.

I have reported to using either a cd slot mount (mobile) or a vent  mount holder (TomTom).

Another option is to attach the phone holder plastic disk to the inside of the dashboard top box, (under the rubber mat), which is where I attached a JML GripGo holder. I only stopped using that because it was not as quick or as convenient to the devices I'm using now.

You could also try a primer, like Loctite SF770, after the silicone remover.

Thanks everyone will try the silicone remover

Why not try a Brodit mount as they just clip to the car with no sticking?

I use the Brodit Proclip Centre Mount as a base for a Garmin satnav suction base.  M'lady (my usual passenger, of course) can see and reach it here, so my hands can stay on the wheel (a fine and six points at risk here, I think?!).  The Brodit clips in behind the frame, which is stronger than vent blades; even so, I thought the fitting stress was a bit much, so I opened up one of the angles into a thinner curve to make it less firm.  The satnav sits higher than the radio screen - good, but not quite as high as I'd like it, though it wouldn't matter for a phone.  Not perfect, then, but worth considering.

The Garmin vent mount works well for me, the weight of the SatNav is taken by a 'leg' that sits below the vent and the vent clamp only has to position the mount. Very little pressure is actually put on the vent vane.

I also have the Brodit mount - would strongly recommend it.
