Cleaning egr valve

Featured Replies

Hi all I will be cleaning my egr valve in the next couple of weeks as it appears to be leaking oil and I don't know when it was last cleaned so will be doing good it for peace of mind. Are there any gaskets that will need replacing when I remove it? I can find mention of an exhaust to egr gasket but it says 3 different sizes on darkside developments. Are there any other gaskets that will need replacing?

Car is a 2003 vrs.

If your taking it off then there is a rubber O ring where it bolts to inlet manifold. If you re-use im not sure how well it would seal with boost running through it.

Ideally it wants a new 'o' ring as it will more than likely have gone flat where it meets the inlet manifold but I have had a few off before and re-used it and its been fine. If it leaks it will be quite obvious anyway as you will get oil weeping out of it after you start using the car again so just keep an eye on it.

I think mine might be leaking already then as it has oil between the egr and the inlet manifold.

They do leak from the valve itself also which is pretty common. Basically the valve stem that slides up and down does not seal 100% and the charge air does leak out of the tell tale hole in the side of the valve carrying a little bit of oil with it.

Yep it is definitely leaking from there too, anything I can do about it?

also where can I get an O-ring from? I can't find one for sale on its own.

The only thing you can do is buy a new one but its really not necessary, the last car I had with one weeping was bought at 65k and was on 140k by the time I sold it. I just stuffed a rag up to the hole to stop it making a mess down the back of the engine.

I would think the dealer would be the best place to ask for an 'O' ring or if not you can measure it and buy one using the size.

Oh bugger, as long ass it doesn't cause any problems I will leave it until I have some spare money for a new egr then.

Would TPS be able to supply one do you think? Thanks for your advice btw.

If the dealer does the part separate from the EGR I suspect TPS will be able to get hold of one for you.

No problem :)

If you struggle like I did then on ebay are 3mm oil resistant / fuel resistant O rings.

Sure they are 3 mm thick,  diameter I cant mind what I ordered but you just measure your old one.
