Goodbye, old friend ...

Featured Replies

I've had to bite the bullet and plan to take my dear old lady, my 94 Favorit LXI estate, off the road when her MoT expires in a few weeks' time.    It really hurts, because she has been a faithful friend for more than 10 years and I love her  ...  but she will soon need a new clutch, and some welding beyond my limited skills, so given the sad spares situation now I have to face economic reality and say goodbye.

She still has less than 80k on the clock so it seems such a shame to scrap her  -  sorry, folks, but my circumstances make it impossible for me to break her myself  -  and so I shall just have to talk to the scrappies.

Not that long ago scrappies  were offering upwards of £100 for a complete car, but I fear that demand has slackened recently - can anyone give me an idea of what I should now expect as a fair price, in UK south midlands, from a commercial car breaker?

Very sorry to hear that. It'll be a shame to lose another from the road.

I know up here, the scrapes have stopped offering money for cars and you now have to pay them to take them away. But obviously you'd need to speak to your local to find out for definite.

You could offer her to an enthusiast for potential restoration?

If the car still drives and is street legal ( easier to collect and transport ) why not put it up for sale as a project or even ( whisper it .... a parts car ) there must be other enthusiasts who would be able to use the parts source

Someone is bound to want it, don't let it go to waste.

Agreed, i think you will get more for it putting it for sale as a project/restoration/spares or repairs on Ebay/Gumtree or Skoda owners clubs on Facebook and that way it has the chance of being saved or atleast saving another one.

Plus if you put it up for sale before the MOT runs out you will have more chance of selling it on as it can still be driven away.

Skodel How silly we are it is only a lump of steel but I know how you must feel I have had mine nearly 20 years from new with 86,000 miles on the clock and I too would miss it if it had to go.

So I do my level best to look after it. I have just one tip for any car driver and it is this ALWAYS put the car in to neutral when stopped for any time and apply the hand brake the times I see drivers riding the clutch at lights it just wears it out and very bad driving habit.

Any way good luck with the next motor there are still some Felicia's out there.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments.

I do agree that it would be a crying shame for her to be crushed if anyone out there wants her, but I fear that enthusiasts willing to invest a lot of time and expense in restoring this particular model are very thin on the ground by now.

Still, you never know, so I'll try an ad on Gumtree - just in case! - whilst she is still road-legal (her MoT expires on June 28, and I'm still driving her at present whilst applying TLC to Felicias).

I'm not very hopeful of any takers, so I'll be glad if anyone can give me an idea what scrappies in UK south midlands / SE are offering just now.
