Steering Column

Featured Replies

Hi Guys.

My trusty Felicia has failed her MOT today. One was the steering rack gaiter, understand that.

The other is "Steering Column retaining device is insecure". Has anyone ever come across this before please? Is there any common point of failure that I can go after or is it just a case of it could be anywhere :(

Thanks everyone.

@Richie32 - I think it probably means that there is a loose bolt somewhere. Hopefully @RicardoM has a diagram showing where these are if

doesn't include the right diagram already.

"Steering Column retaining device" ?? Could they be more cryptic?

I would go to the MOT shop and ask "WTF are you talking about? Show me that device and why it is insecure. Now."

I guess they are paid to help people and not put them solving riddles.

Is it a bracket?

Is it a bolt?

Show me the item

I want to be told.

PS

Your profile is showing Car:Skoda Fabia Vrs MK1. It'd be better to add in there your Felicia, type, year.

Thanks very much for your responses Guys. @KenONeill @RicardoM

I know, it's the vaguest of the vague. Might as well say that the chocolate fluffle wuffle valve isn't returning properly. :( All I can see is that the steering column does move a bit when you try and move the steering wheel so I need to do a bit more checking.

Oh, my profile has Fabia VRS Mk1 because I have one of those as well. Gruber's little tank (the Felicia) belongs to my other half.

@Richie32 - Well, at that rate I suspect that it may well be a loose bolt on the upper steering column retaining bracket, which will be under the lower facia panel. You say you can see the column moving, but how? Vertically up and down, left and right, in and out normal to the wheel rim?

@KenONeill I think your spot on. I took the facia off and the column is loose around the two bolts before the join of the column (I can move the steering wheel up and down) . The bolts were pretty tight but after taking them off and looking at another picture on Google it looks like it's missing a couple of black spacers. So no matter how tight it is it's still loose enough to move up and down.... and fail on the MOT. I just need to find an alternative to use as the spacer I think.

It's called an adjusting washer. Very brittle when old. Part number 6U0419123.

See below the correct position for installation.

Thanks very much @RicardoM. After much searching a very helpful Skoda dealer sent me their last two. Fitted them last week, steering column now solid, and she's passed her MOT! :):)

Thanks guys. :)
