Which top down strategy game?

Featured Replies

I'm looking for strategy game to exercise my brain in the evenings, I used to loke playing the Dune and Command & Conquer games when I was a kid on the Amiga. I had SimCity 2000 on the PC too.

Now I'm looking for something sililar.

However, it must run of a 2.2Ghz Celeron with 256mb and no dedicated graphics card.

Current ideas are:

Sim City 3000

Command & Conquer (but which one)

Dune (not sure if this brand is still evolving or stuck on Dune II)

Command and Conquer was a follow on game from Dune II

also have you thought about games like Settlers I, II, III or IV (V is rubbish)

Civilisation is really taxing and theres 4 version (maybe 5 of that out)

and finally you got all them Rome, Samuri, ages of empire games

but I would recommend Settlers if you want fun

and Civilisation if you want really taxing

Ooo I had Settlers 2 when I was a kid too. Found it enjoyable  forgotten about that.

I still play age of empires 2 on the lappie, passes a couple of hours away in hotel rooms.

My vote would have to go to -Command and Conquer generals and Zero Hour. Both are well worth a look, they run fine on my laptop as well and it only has a MX440 go graphics chip in it.

Lasts a while that one as after the campaigns are done you have a skirmish mode you can dive into, where you can set up the various difficulty levels for the game, not to mention there are literally hundreds of modifications / maps / levels out there freely available for it.

cheers

Civ 3 is good, played that for probably days and days non stop. Once you start dreaming about a game it's probably a good idea to lay off it for a while.

Civ 4 which came out just before xmas has flashy graphics and seems even more in depth, TBH it's taking me a while to get into it unlike Civ 3.

Well I've got myself SImCity 3000 and C&C Red ALert - The latter cost just £4 in Asda

  • 1 month later...

kool I got both of them games also

but Red alert 2 runs really quick the Time is out of sink with the game

think it has something to do with the Mobile processor

anyways I'm after a new stategy game anyone got any other ideas?

I could be tempted by age of empires but would like to hear other options ideas 1st?

Do what I have done, download Winuae the Amiga emulator and get googling. To get it working you need to find the kickstart rom images, the links are around they just take some finding. Once you have those download some ADF files of your favourite games and your off. One fully functioning amiga on your PC. Works fine on my PIII 1GHZ laptop. If you are feeling brave you can play around with Hard drive images and get workbench working. Took a while before everything came back, now I can remember most things.

Quick screenshot below from the emulator.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is a good choice

For that spec, I'd try C&C Generals/Zero Hour with everything turned down or Shogun Total War. Shogun was an awesome game, in fact, the main reason for me buying my first PC!!!

go on mousebreaker.com a few good mind teasters on there.

Anyone been playing Supreme Commander?

C&C The First Decade. No need to choose which to buy as you've got the last 10 years worth!

Edit - Just realised I've replied to a 2 year old thread. Joy.

i have sim city on the ds and can easily see the whole day go by without realising it.

Company of Heroes ....... best strategy based game I have ever played. and there is a thriving community churning out extra maps etc. I love playing the Germans and ragging the Americans arses with a squadron of Panthers :thumbup:

There's an internet version of Advance Wars, it's highly commendable.

Battalion: Freedom

Settlers I is awesome and has the best music ever. And the little pigs are cute too lol.

Even though it's getting long in the toth now, Total Annihilation is still the daddy :) It can be had for pennies on a budget label now too. There's also a few good ones that have now been released free or open source available here > Liberated Games

I didn't think my Vista laptop with the most basic of graphic would play any games but I have been happily playing Age of Empires II (that takes me back to 2001) and C&C Generals this summer :thumbup:Mostly playing AoEII

Alpha Centauri is good. It's a little older now so would be cheap.

If you get the Amiga emulator, The Populous games are good, or Utopia, Megalomania.

Civ series and/or AoE series.

Football Manager 2009 comes out soon.

;)

I used to play C&C Generals all the time and C&C Red Alert before that.. wasn't that impressed by C&C RA2 or C&C3 but that was due to poor code on EA's part.. Hoping they make a better job of C&C RA3. :D

I've wasted far too much of my life on Civ 3 & 4 :D and now playing Civilization Revolution on the PS3

Starcraft

I still play that game and it's still great.

Will work on 98, XP and Vista

Also can play online

I've really enjoyed playing Evil Genius. Great idea and I highly recommend it!

[EDIT] And I still play Dungeon Keeper from all those years ago. Still one of my favourite games ever.
