where do i find filters for the air con/cabin air

i can probably find the oil and air filters easily enough

but are there any other filters on the engine side of things

the car was fully serviced on purchase recently but at 80k i want to check any filters which dont get changed on a regular service

i have the handbook but i dont think it covers how to change the filters

any thanks chaps for a good forum...

cheers

Your pollen filter is underneath the passenger side dashboard, where your right foot would be if you was sitting passenger, stick your head under and you'll see 2... slidey locking things that slide towards each other, slide them so they're together and give it a gentle pull down and you'll be greeted to the pollen filter.

I changed the girlfriends at the weekend as I don't recall it ever being done.

Air filter in engine compartment in black plastic cheese wedge shaped box. Two screws one side, two clips the other give you enough leverage to replace that without needing to disconnect any of the cables/pipes.

Oil filter you need to remove the plastic engine cover and it will be right in front of the engine, in the centre. Black plastic top with socket head you will need to unscrew, to access the filter. when you take the cap off, the filter should be attached so take care not to drip oil everywhere. Replacement is same as fitting but make sure new oil seals are fitted to the cap and the centre spindle too. Lubricate them with fresh oil prior to re-fitting the filter.

There is also a fuel filter which most likely needs changing. On my three cyl model, it is in the engine bay, on the offside, (Drivers) just behind the headlight. Silver-ish metal canister with hoses attached. Quite simple disconnect/reconnect procedure, with a simple plastic retainer clip and two metal clips you squeeze with pliers to loosen/re-fit but take car as you are dealing with open fuel pipes. Smoke now, see you in heaven!

Test afterwards there is no leakage, run engine a min, turn off again and check for leaks again. No bleeding is necessary as they self-bleed.

When you re-fit the engine cover, make sure the little plastic/rubber bobbins are there as it will rattle around or vibrate if not popped on properly. They are quite easy to lose but cheap to replace at a dealer.

solid ammunition there...and thanks

will check out all these engine bits as i guess the garage only did a sump oil change and a filter...which is all i expected hence this post

the air filters shouldnt pose too much bother..and i will attempt the fuel one...

the inner one mentioned in the post above seems easy as well...i see a wadge of soundproofing which i guess i just pull back

easy peasy ...i hope

that gets me on track for clean air and fuel...before starting a long term relationship with the car

ugh!! perhaps that is why there is sometimes a funny smell when i put on auto air con just now..

can this give one a bad throat..i have had one for about a week...

The pollen filter, as mentioned by LGM, is usually covered by a sound insulation cover too. Pull that out gently, try not to bend it much as they start to droop then. Make sure you put the new filter the correct way round, there is a flow indicator on new filters so it flows properly. When you put it in, it can be a bit fiddly to re-fit the sliding clips but be careful and it does work. The whole filter needs pushing in enough, then the coverlet goes a tiny bit further on, slide the clips keeping pressure on them as if to push harder on the filter so they slide OVER the retaining groove things. If they fall back off, you didn't do it quite right. They do go, can be fiddly and you'll most likely be laying on your back, with the set slide back as much as possible, causing a slipped disc, and interesting use of the English vocabulary!

thanks ...i will follow that with close attention..if it can be done wrong...i have done it..but fortunately rectified

i will take a note of any positioning and mark a diagram... and rehearse in the garage some appropriate phrases linked to auto part fitting...worst so far were the vw door lock mechanism springs i did on the 1.6 mk4..i gave up on the boot lock when is finally seized.

thanks again...all this info is well kept for future

hope this helps...as you can see my soundproofing was wrecked when the person changing the cabin filter didnt bother to remove the item..so at least i still have it...its cracked a bit and i might consider replacing it as well...

the little sliders come and go quite easily but as i dont have the replacement filter..i wont do anything yet

it did strike me it could be already replaced...eg the hamfisted breakage of the soundproofing

in any event good luck with the replacement..and if you are successful..there is someone you could tell where it can be purchased...;)

Q.E.D.

aha!!

Other thing to watch out for, if your are really inquisitive and look up while removing that filter, you will end up with dust in your eye(s)!

Have a vacuum cleaner. Hoover/ Dyson etc.

Sook oot the stoor before removing and while removing and once the filter is out, and be nice and clean before fitting the new one.

(As described by a loon fae the north east.)

Quote from an internet source:- "stoor is dust and general muck, and rhymes with sure.
oose is dust which is so thick it’s positively furry and dust bunny-ish, it rhymes with moose.
glaur is dirt, and it rhymes with for."

Come to think about it, Cornish folk probably have their own words for the above as we are "brothers in arms" separated by distance and weather?

Other warnings including watching out for invisible small stone chips that are lying in wait for your elbows/head to find, though maybe you have come across these little blighters before while kneeling in a not spotless garage floor - that makes me jump and say (more) bad words!

i checked out the fuel filter..and it looks an easy job...not like the u-tube ones for earlier fabia's

the pipes i will take care with removing, especially the clips, and refitting regarding leak checking

i see three spacer items around the rim and that locating item which holds the thing from turning in the holder

after taking off the pipes...what do i do about the three rim clips, and the locating bracket at the pipe

do they all come off as well

havent got the new filter so i dont know if they come with it as fitting items, and hose clips?

thanks again for timely and clear messages

cheers

WOW! Thats a lightweight peice of insulation... The one I had was really think, heavy duty stuff that was quite hard to tear, cut etc. " They" managed to bend it so it drooped so I sowed a bit of velcro to it, with a sticky velcro pad stuff on the plastic air filter retainer so as to suspend it better as you tended to keep kicking it but I discovered the whole;e thing missing on changing the air filter one day, way, way after a factory service so had no argument to speak of, in asking them to replace it! The velcro I sowed on was tricky as the insulation was soon tough as to be hard to pass the needle through! Kind of heavy duty carpet type matting as opposed to lightweight expanded polystyrene.

dohh..i think i got the friday night one...:D

its soooo breakable

your idea is good..i will do as you do and stick some carpet tile to mine to strengthen it and make up the bit that got mangled at the filter end..

all in a days work for people who care about their stuff

The plastic lugs or rim clips just pop back, the other plastic ring kinda comes off with the filter. I think you'll get a new one with some brands of filter. It is basically a guide to locate the filter in the correct position for ease of fitment. The filter then just lifts out, if you have disconnected the pipes.

Just as an aside, Haynes have released a manual for the Fabia 2, which is really helpful. the book number is 6033 and covers from may 2007 to 2014 (07 to 64 reg) Petrol and diesel.  ISBN number 978 1 78521 033 4. There are some models it doesn't cater for but they are usually unusual versions.

Is there an insulation piece on the drivers side too? I never had one there as duel controls were fitted from the dealer from new.

yes i think this would be the answer to my future forays on this user friendly car...not too many sender units and that annoying lamda probe..:(

it will help me to get to know the construction and engineering behind the engine and turbo..i like engines

thanks and see below

i rubbed my hand under the drivers side dash and it feels like a full panel of what i assume is the same polystyrene

i wont fiddle with it though..and hope i never have to remove it in anger

cheers

Thanks for that. I am guessing then that the dealer/fitter removed it to fit the duel controls and did not want the aggro of modifying it to fit with the cables!

the under bonnet insulation is around £18 from a dealer so this piece might be a little lower in price and worth replacing!
