rear right wheel squeeking when i brake

Featured Replies

hi guys i have just serviced the car around Christmas and the noise only just started last week. i was wondering what could cause that as the brake pads has only just changed 6 months ago and i only do 10 miles journey a day not including weekend?

Take the pads out, clean the edges of them, clean the edges of the disc (very outside and inner part near the hub face)

apply some brake grease to the backing and edge where it sits into the carrier and it'll be fine.

when you say clean, do you mean using fairy liquid with water?

Sorry, used to clean as a mechanic term. Scrape with a flat

screwdriver if there's a lip or sand with some sand paper.

And that looks fine yeah :)

ive never done the pads on these cars, do i need to bleed them first then pads out?

I would advise taking it to a local garage and asking them to service the rear brakes.

ok thank you again for your help, i also think it would be wise for me to take it to the garage too :)

Do you have drums or discs on the rear?

i have drums.

Mine do this when they are cold and damp first thing in the morning (MK1 fabia but they are the same brakes). Don't know how fast/hard you drive but you could try this:

Find an empty NSL road and pick up some speed (ideally 70-80mph would be good) then brake firmly almost to a stop. You don't need to do an emergency stop just brake hard.

Do this a few times which will get some heat into the brakes and might improve it if you have some dirt/rust on the shoes or even a slightly sticky mechanism in the drums.

You could also try pulling the handbrake whilst driving slowly, not hard just enough to make the shoes contact. This would also have the same effect of clearing anything stuck on the shoes.

The rear drums do very little effort at the best of times so if your not driving far or fast regularly then they are likely to become stuck or rusty

If you don't know what you are doing don't touch the brakes leave them to a mechanic as needless to say they are very important safety feature!

i will have a go at taking the wheels off and the drum cover and use air compressor then see how that does otherwise will ask my mechanic to take it apart and clean them. the front pads are still like new!
