Apologies if there is a more specific thread for this but it seems the only mention of it is in a fabia thread so I thought I would start a new one - I hope someone can help and give me a not too expensive resolution :P Here goes:

 

I have been going round and round in trying to source the post cat nox sensor in my 57 plate octavia scout that I bought last sunday, as the engine management light came on, I took it to my local garage who cleared the error:

"04147 Passive/Sporadic Nox Sensor signal too low (G295) P1033-002"

 

Then I drove round for about a day and the light came back on, so I took it back to the garage for further diagnostic and I was hoping that the answer would be that I just needed a replacement lambda sensor, but it seems that on these engines the G295 sensor is a specific nox sensor that VAG are saying costs £436.30 which when I have just paid £3200 for a car that has only done 69,300 odd miles made me feel a bit ill. 

 

My Garage has suggested that I try and source a sensor online, but I am not sure what to be searching for I think it is this part -

which is the cheapest legitimate part I can find (suggestions appreciated)

 

My garage also mentioned that he has heard of a jury rig fix where you put a spacer in between the sensor and the exhaust thereby lifting the detector out of the inline gas flow a bit.

 

I guess the real question is does anyone know if Signal too low means

 

1) that the sensor is detecting too low emissions??????

 

2) that the signal from the sensor is not strong enough???

 

if it were a comparatively cheapo lambda sensor I would just change it to see if that resolved the issue.

 

I would really appreciate someone to give me their input, I can happily furnish you with extra info if needed.

 

Forgot to add it passed the MOT and the emissions test 3 weeks ago. Also my research shows there is a possibly an ECU update that may change the operational minimum values which may also be available - any information on that would also be greatly received.

Signal too low - basically means the sensor is knackered.  It means that reading from the sensor instead of reading the PPM levels of NoX, are instead just reading zero.  Usually a sign that the sensor has either gone short-circuit or open-circuit (usually open-circuit).

 

P1033 - confirmed as NoX Sensor - reading too low.  If the G295 sensor has failed, then it will need to be replaced.  The £400 odd pounds is not the right price.  A quick google has shown then to be in the region of £100 to £150, which is more reasonable.  You need to try and get the VW part code - and that will help you reference either original part or pattened part as necessary.
