Replacement door speakers

Featured Replies

I have a 2007-57 Fabia MkII hatch, L3 spec (think this corresponds to Elegance outside the UK for the pre-FL version).

I fear my door speakers (factory fit) are on the way out, with a fair amount of rattling and possible distortion.

I've overall been fairly happy with the sound on the factory speakers, which have been married up to a Columbus for the last 7 years or so, so not necessarily keep on a massive upgrade. I'm certainly not interested in installing an auxiliary amplifier / subwoofer, etc.

I've got the 8 speaker setup in my car, so have the tweeter units in the front columns either side of the windscreen, and just above the door handles in the rear passenger doors. These seem to be fine; it's only the main speaker units lower down I'm looking at replacing.

Am I correct in believing the main speakers also do mid-range as well as bass?

I realise that any replacement third-party units are likely to require spacers / etc as the mounting points for screws won't necessarily line up, and I've seen suggestions on here that the factory units on this variant of the Fabia are of an unusual / unconventional size.

But I don't want to get into having to get holes cut in the door cards to accommodate deeper units, so I'm after something that is broadly similar to the factory units.

What about wire connectors on the speakers themselves - do manufacturers use standard socket designs, or will I need to find adapters / solder bits of wire together?

Worth getting acoustic matting to reduce road noise while the door cards are off?

Also, don't laugh, would Halfords be up to the job? Or can you recommend anywhere in the Exeter area?

Maybe £50 for a pair of speakers? Or am I being very stingy?!

your looking around £200 for complete front speakers and tweeters including mounting brackets.

hope this link works but they are focals designed to plug and play.

If it doesn't search focal Vw on eBay and the first one should come up from car audio security

Do these offer a upgrade to the stock speakers? I have stock but the bass performance is lacking and I have to use a Sub to compensate. being into my traveling and a camera op I need boot space. would this offer better bass response with factory unit (RNS315) if I upgraded the fronts and rears with these?

Much better, there's other makes out there like jbl by Harmon that are good, these however fit right in

and if you need space run a compact sub

I use the kenwood underseat one and it's perfect for what I wanted

the speakers and sub are still under £200

Thats really interesting! what is the sub model number (link) I am a sucker for good audio and at the moment my Edge 12" Boy racer sub from my 17 year old days is way to big and taking up too much room. Definitely a summer project this! Thanks

But from my experience thus far (see my other thread here) it seems that one needs a more powerful amplifier to get bass out of after-market speakers to the same level as the factory ones when used with the factory stereo.

Can you comment on whether you used yours with the factory stereo or had already replaced it? (and thus probably had a more powerful amplifier in it; often these are 50W x4 as opposed to 20Wx4)
