245/45/17 instead of 225/45/17

Featured Replies

What do you think? Anyone tried such replacement?

Fuel consumption will increase - hopefully only a bit - but sidewall height will increase by about 9% so the ride should be more comfortable.

And it should look better ;) without going for 18".

The price difference on Uniroyal RainSport 3 is only about £15/piece.

I thought you only have an extra 20mm of width otherwise everything else is the same from your thread title.

45 is percentage of the width - not constant value - so tyre is higher - 110mm vs 101mm.

I forgot that ratio bit. :blush:biggrin:

Will this not affect the speedo if the circumference of the tyre is increased?

Check that 245 mm isn't too wide to fit on the rim.

If you are looking to increase the sidewall height why are you complicating things by doing it via the width (225 > 245)?

Would it not simply be easier to increase the profile (45 > 50) and keep the current width?

This is what I've done...

My speedo now perfectly matches the GPS @ 80mph and I haven't suffered any tyre / rim damage from potholes since.

Be aware of any potential insurance complications...

Higher profile means bigger speedo difference.

I know that I'll need to inform insurer.

The ride is perfectly fine for me ;) I just would like to have a bit more rubber sticking to the road ;) lead foot ;)

Maybe 235/45/17 would be less problematic ;)
