Superb 2012 left xenon headlight not working - not a light bulb or control module problem

Featured Replies

Hi,

A few weeks ago I purchased a Skoda Superb Combi 2012 1.6 Diesel Greenline. I ought the car in Berlin and am planning on using it here. At the time of purchase left headlight was not working and I was hoping it will be a quick issue to fix buy exchanging a light bulb. Now the issue is unknown and I cannot pass the state technical examination of the car (TUV in Germany).

Took the car to one of the main car parts dealer and repair shop chain in Germany - A.T.U.

Tried the following solutions:

1. Replacing the lightbulb. https://www.gluehbirne.de/2-x-OSRAM-XENARC-ORIGINAL-D3S-35W-XENON-Scheinwerferlampe-66340-HBI-4150K-Hg-free-OEM?gclid=CjwKEAjw-LLKBRCdhqmwtYmX93kSJAAORDM6QZlfePEX4MpFMrePPqpeEDnckxJv1J0KqDaFRUouqBoCHvLw_wcB . This did not fix the issue.

2. Replacing the headlight control module. https://www.lichtex.de/skoda-superb-3t-hella-5df-009-368-15-afs-leistungsmodul-7l6941329b/a-99101667/ . This also did not solve the issue.

Did any one else had similar problems with the headlight? At what other parts should I be looking?

Thanks,

Raitis

Any fault codes?

Have you tried swapping the ballast (silver control module) from one headlight to the other?

Will make an appointment at the official Skoda service here in Berlin for the next week. So far people at the service where I took the car didn't tell me anything about fault codes.

Also did not try switching the ballasts. Is that smtn I could attempt on my own without a specialist.

This is my first car. I am pretty handy/technical in with some other everyday stuff like computers, microcontrollers or bicycles but thought a 2012 car would be above my level :D

It's high voltage so there are risks, usual precautions of having everything turned off and waiting for them to discharge will help.

The hard part will be accessing the two ballasts, I think they are on the underside of the headlight next to the control module. Also check for corrosion as it's not uncommon for water to get in the connectors.

I believe the official workshop suggest the front bumper is removed to get at the lights so you may struggle to get access.

There isn't anything that hard about the cars, you just need the right equipment to see what's happening. For example, VCDS is a great diagnostic tool :)

Thanks for the suggestion. First will take the car to the Skoda service and ask to find out exactly what the problem is. Dont want to risk messing smtn else up just yet :D Bumper removal sounds like a huge project.

Then later might be investing in the VCDS diagnostic tool. Seems like it might come in handy later also ;)

You get any luck with this, raitis?

The headlight problem is possibly why the car was being sold.

I had an issue with my A4's Adaptive xenon's. A loose connection inside the headlight unit to the solenoid (for high beam flap) prevented this working, failing the MOT.

The bumper off job is not that difficult, although you probably need a thin socket extension bar, and a good few hours at least to complete the job.

I guess i found my fault more by luck than management and it saved me having to purchase a new headlight at circa £1000, which is what i would have had to do if i had taken it to the dealers. And the £1000 was just the part - possibly add as much again for the labour.

I would price a replacement up, and then follow langers advice, if you have not sorted the issue yet.
