If you had a choice

Featured Replies

I've been toying with buying a new donkey for a while now. I've got a 56 plate vrs lightly modified with a facelift front end. It been the best car I have ever owned and has never cost me anything apart from an engine mount last week which ain't bad going for a 11 year old car. I fancy either a new VRS, Golf R, leon cupra 300 or an S3. The problem is I'm a bit unsure if I should I get rid of my VRS as it's been such good and reliable car and may regret my new car choice. If you were in my place which car would you go for and why??

Have you had the car from new?

No ive had her for about 6 years now.

Nice :)

Personally I would try to hold on to it as much as possible. It has already lost most of its value and it won't loose much more if you keep it for another 2-3 years... As long as there are no engine-related problems or you feel its getting tired.... why sell it?

Say you start having some serious problems in a year or two... how much cheaper would you sell it for then compared to now?

I suppose it would be a hard break-up if you do end up selling it, considering the fact that you have been happy with it and you enjoyed the mods etc...

so you're looking at downsizing ?

I would stay away from the S3 as good as they are they absolutely drink fuel my friend gets as low as 14 mpg but  you can get some serious power down and they sound lovely.

now I've driven the 2013 cupra its a good all rounder but I find the steering feels dead and even worse when It looses traction which it can do in 3rd when you put you foot down,  another note is depending on what driving you're doing 70 on the motorway in 6th it was still doing like 2,700rpm maybe I'm just used to diesels in that respect.

my choice would be golf R although I've only been sat in one and not driven it but going on specs alone it should be impressive or some other options depending on budget, type R or the focus RS (the RS though feels typical ford plasticy inside)

I like the RS but would like something a little more low key as my car is abit shouty ATM (its in summer mode) as the car is red and I'm running 20" green Audi wheels. I like the leon but 300bhp is a lot in the wet to put down and would be the same with the VRS with a map. If the VRS was 4x4 i would buy that over all of them, but they only do it in diesel. I do like the golf as it's cheaper and been told it's more fun to drive than the s3 but the build on the s3 is really nice and also to be honest abit of snob value. When you say he was only getting 14 mpg was that giving it some or town driving?

Extra question

Stay with your car. How would you feel if you changed your ultra reliable car, and the next one is a lemon? If you need a change of scenery, hire a car for the weekend. It's well known that the fastest car going is a hire car....

LoL That's my other worry. This car has been ultra reliable I've had more problems with my new Alhambra. Honestly only thing that has broke was the engine mount everything else has been servicing. It was the same with my last skoda nothing ever went wrong and they both put a stupid smile on my face every time I drove em.

What about a Superb Tsi 4x4 280 bhp? Nothing not to like there!

That's odd as I feel the car wants you to drive faster as it just loves hanging on to fast corners.

Granted you can get torque steer if you hoof it low down but the speed is really in a different league to your present car. Why not look at the 4wd ST version as that would be an S3 in wolf's clothing?

Totally agree, it handles well... But thats different than it feeling dead through thr steering wheel just a personal feeling,  that's why I moved away from passats after the b5.5/6s. No I wouldnt compare any of these to my vrs totally a step above and beyond!

On another note the best car I've ever driven for fun factor mg zr 2.0 le mans with minimal work it's a very capable track car
