glove compartment question

Featured Replies

firstly i have the fabia 2, 1.4Tdi, level 3 if that can be a help

i dont have all the refinements in the handbook, radio controls on the steering wheel etc, but that is ok...i am pleased with the car

what i cant find in the handbook under ventilation is the small device in the glove compartment

its a rotary collar marked with a dot and a snowflake...

in the perimeter is a hole which matches up with a hole which i guess is connected by a pipe to the air conditioning..hence the snowflake symbol

what i need to know is really what its for and if one of you have one is it beneficial

ie to cool the glove compartment for whatever reason

i know i may have this R's for tit...

i thought it was a light...but their is no bulb that i can see

There should be a kind of circular vent cover. Twist one way, it lets the chilled air into the glovebox, twist the other way, it restricts or closes the vent. It doesn't actually connect to the air con I believe but just allows a cold stream of air to flow in. It is most likely taken from the airflow from the centre vents or something. It is handy if you keep a snack or something on there or if you have a cold drink as it will stay cold longer. Only useful when running and open though. If you run the car, switch on air con etc, put your hand against the hole and see if you can feel the cooling effect.

thanks..that seems logical...

next time i am doing a bit of driving at say 60 etc i will open it..my passenger will..and see what comes through the open hole...i will try it with a/c as well...

it really can be handy if it will keep a couple of cans of coke cool for us to drink on a stop..

good reply...and thanks again

You should feel it with air con on with higher fan speed, whilst stationary.. That'll be enough to know its coming through normal or cold. Then press econ, give it a min and it'll go less cool, put back on air-con and feel it cool down again! I have found if you fill the compartment too much, it will be less effective so keep it to a reasonable level! I always keep a small drink in there when teaching... (Non alcoholic, I hasten to add)!

Spotted the small shelf/tray under the dashboard yet, just in front of your right knee? Just near to the fusebox cover. Missed by many for ages, sometimes!

I am assuming your model has the armrest too? FAB 3 level... They have handy storage but often the buttons to open it fail/break. Quite easy to replace and not expensive but annoying!

yes its strange that one needs to unclick to get it down...twice

i dont use an armrest when driving...although might be good when stationary to snooze in a car park etc listening to music whilst the lady crow does her shopping

i have some items stored in it though

I seem to remember folk saying take care of coins getting lodged when you flip the armrest up!

Also, there used to be a thread where people noticed things that they had taken a while to discover.. A bit like that small shelf/storage cubbyhole I mentioned.

Things like pen clip, credit card or similar clip, both in glovebox... Ticket holder in windscreen to hold pay and display type tickets, that sort of thing. Auxiliary port in centre console for running an mp3, etc through the stereo. Switching the temp from celsius to fahrenheit...Might be worth a revisit to see what else might be "Found".

the windscreen pay and display ticket holder is worth ££££

my daughter lost hers down the windscreen vent slot so the parking warden couldnt see it on display

good by £60..!!!

will remember to put mine there in future

the aux port in the centre...hmm..it looks a bit like a little hole with a brass ferrule, also the cigar lighter although has the shape of the lighter doesnt seem to have any element to heat it up...just another little hole with a brass ferrule

is that correct...i dont smoke cigars any more and certainly no smoking in the car applies....but i have a mickey mouse tyre inflator which actually does work well...which has a plug to go into a cigar lighter for the 12v supply

pics maybe to follow if necessary...seems to me something is missing.???

regarding credit cards..or more exactly library card...same shape

on my golf mine went down the side of the storage area just in front of the gearshift...i spent ages looking round the library car park and entrance thinking it was lost...then i got a brainwave and took off the surround to the storage area...there is was

cheers

Yeah, the lighter is a dummy plug cover. Most peeps use the socket as a USB port nowadays or as you said, tyre inflator. (You may even have one in the boot if there is no spare wheel under the false floor). Do you get sunglasses holder in the roof lining in yours? Many people have added them retro as did I, to lower spec ( Pun intended) Models. Nice tiny little removable plastic "Pockets" In the boot, to the left and right for storage, along with a funny semi circular plastic trim-thing for storing things in the boot that may roll around. (This may have been removed but if you're lucky, it'll still be in the boot or under the false floor. In the boot, there is also a storage space for a warning triangle, just inside on the panel below the boot lock. It has two rubber straps to hold a triangle but the item itself is an optional extra... One from Tesco will fit! You might have small flop down cubby hole type boxes under the front seats if you are lucky too. I am unsure what models had them as standard... Mine didn't but at less then £8 a box from the dealer, I got and fitted them myself. Handy for certain items but not too big.

You can buy a similar thing in Halfords, the sticks with self adhesive tape, in the windscreen for just the same reason for around five quid. I think the skoda one is only a few quid to replace as I thought of getting one for the opposite side. That would be the more natural place to fit it so as not to obscure the drivers view. On Skodas though, they are screwed in to the door pillar so without taking off the trim, I don't know if there is already a mounting hole. Meant to look, never did. Be handy though, for my ADI badge.

Oh, If you ever have the upper glove box lid dislodge, its quite a simple repair as they are held in place by splined pins which can slip out of place and the lid pops off/won't shut. Not a dealer £50 fix but five mins with a small blade.

i would like the underseat storage...there is a space under the passenger seat and not under the drivers...but the space under the passenger seat...no sliding drawer etc...the trim is a bit slack and i think someone has tried to give it a pull out to see if that was the storage...for £8 that wouldnt be a problem to get one from a dealer...and good for the passenger to store the on journey items which arent in either of the glove boxes...

regarding the boot etc..i will mount an expedition to survey it..it is full of bits and bobs just now...i do have a full size spare and rim..although not the alloy type...

this car is more than just transport...its a magic trip into the land of ingenuity...

are the newer fabias the same i wonder...in my area there is a main dealer in helston and loads of fabias and yetis floating around...quiet sort of beasts...are they all petrol now...has the 2 cylinder tractor engine bit the dust in skoda land?

think mine seems to be more responsive and smooth with the standard shell diesel....the turbo as i have discovered is most effective at 2-3k rpm and in third...

cant drive sedately anymore!!!!

3 cyl, surely? Unless someone nicked a bit! The flat panel under the upholstered seat is just a plastic trim... It can be unscrewed and the box screwed back in place of it. It is easier if you unbolt the seats and either tilt them a lot or even take them fully out, as I did. You will need to disconnect the battery and unplug the underseat wiring and will need a particular bolt fitting, as per most VAG bolts they don't want you to remove yourself.  Torx or something. Forget the sizes but should be easy to find. Don't let this put you off it as the sooner you do it, the longer you'll get the use of them! £8 a box, remember, will be £16 a pair! Not sure of the availability.

As for your spare, I assume then, you won't have the pump as that and a bottle of (Near useless) Sealant replaced that on some models. No jack either.

yes...just been boot surveying...got the full jack kit and a steel rim wheel and tyre all pumped up...its a smaller size tyre than the alloy ones but i reckon it is just for emergencies...175 instead of 190..and the rest

i see some odd clips and brackets here and there and i think they are for a net???

i found the triangle clips under the boot sill..

now...are those panels which have cloth on them in the boot sides...just for looks or do they come off to reveal  some space...

i have yet to change a rear bulb...what provisions are made in the boot for access

the passenger seat storage seems like a job too far just now..will slip a little ice cream tub under the seat with velcro maybe for any items...

good old 3 cyl 1.4...did you know that the swept volume of a cylinder on my car multiplied by 3 is 1.4  and if multiplied by 4 is 1.9 in round terms

so the bore and stroke of both engines are the same...same piston same conrod same valves as well i guess

the 1.4 3 cylinder petrol was the largest 3 till bmw brought out its 1.5 in 2014

so wiki tells me

HAHA...JUST NOTICED 2 CYLINDER...MY BAD.....

?

Does wiki mention the biggest 3 cylinder diesel for a car?, the 1.8 Turbo that Alfa Romeo built.

No space as such, just panels.Yeah, Skoda supply a few different nets. One small one clips in left side, from light to seat, another along the whole of the seat back and another along the whole floor area. I guess the one to the left can also be used or doubled up for use on the right... I have not done this although I have the others. There is also one that kind of goes under the parcel shelf in an underslung manor, for things such as a brolly etc. Keeps it elevated away from other things so handy if damp! The parcel shelf has an upper and lower position too, to allow a bigger shelf, smaller boot if you get the idea. It can also be stored upright, behind the seat and out of the way, if needed. Theres a very small pair of panels in each rear corner of the boot. pop little things like bulbs, etc in. Perhaps a small drink for later. The plastic panel comes off so could be missing. Changing rear bulbs is simplicity its-self... There is a plastic cover inside the boot, behind the cluster, with a knob on you just unscrew. The cluster can then be removed from outside to swap bulbs and re-fit. Front bulbs ar ok to do but the sidelights can be tricky. The guided way is to remove the wheel liner for access... **** that! I just got a set of pick tools from ebay for a few quid. Kind of like bent screwdrivers. Gently pull the bulb holder off from inside the bonnet area. Quite small space so be gentle and don't cut/sever the wires.

I fitted nicer looking silver bulbs in my indicators as the orange looks a bit naff. They still light amber but look a lot nicer. Message me if you are interested in a few small cosmetic improvements to the door closer plates, hinges and grab handles. This consists of dampers so the handles don't "SLAM" when you let go. I was planning on selling a few sets on eBay but didn't get round to it yet.

correct..next question please

there have been a number of racing motorcycle 3 cylinder engines and one V3...2 and 1 configuration

there are so many i couldnt be bothered sorting them out...but reckon apart from petrol there may have been a diesel or two and certainly 4 and 2 stroke types

mv augusta is one and i think the works honda's may have had a 3

quite novel but since width is a criteria..3 is better than 2 and slimmer than 4...without getting too small a cylinder bore

i remember a large single cylinder car engine...i think it was 5 litres and did 500rpm flat out

more to follow..
