1.4TSi - what oil temperature is warm enough for giving it "the beans"

Featured Replies

How warm does the engine oil have to be for it to be safe enough to explore the performance envelope <ahem> of my 1.4TSi. I know that you shouldn't over stress a turbo engine until the oil is warm enough so that one doesn't damage the turbo bearings but what is the actual figure I need to wait for before I can bury the throttle into the carpet? I've been working on the assumption of approx 77C before commencing play...

PS Yes I'm loving my new Skoda, the surge of torque is addictive and useful.

The manual for my 1.4 TSI states:

"If the engine oil temperature is in the range 80-110 °C, the engine operating temperature is reached.

If the oil temperature is lower than 80 °C or above 110 °C, avoid high engine revs, full throttle and high engine loads."

My father owned a 1968 Holbay Rapier H120 . It's the only other car I've driven with an oil temperature gauge.  IIRC the oil had to be warmed up to 80°C before unleashing the 100hp plus via twin sidedraft Webers ,racing manifolds, cam, clutch, oil cooler etc etc. 28mpg even with overdrive. How things change.B)

You are going on the 'Indicated oil temp' being shown.

So if it is taking around 5 miles to indicate 50*oC or so then Full Beans is going to be doing no harm to your 1.4TSI between that and 80*oC-92*oC indicated oil temps.

The Coolant and coolant systems which includes Oil is always trying to get the oil back to around 90*oC which is where the coolant is at pretty soon after start up

as that is an efficient temp.

(Cooling fluids / engines requires energy.)

90 degrees + 10 minutes ride after that, if you can about your car.

Yuh it's high revs and high load you should avoid. The turbo will look after itself.

lol @ 90*oC and 10 minute,  that is good or predictable Dirty Diesel advice.

A good running 1.4TSI with better oil than the Castrol / Quantum 5w 30 FS LL might go 100's of miles in winter and the oil not get to 90*oC

unless given a bit of spirited driving.

I don't go above 3-1/2k till its reaches 80C but, as the torque is going south at 3-1/2k there isn't any need to go for the revs.
