All Motoring Press advised to avoid the Up/Citigo Auto Box (even Heseltines pro-VW publications).

They quote Very Slow changes & Reliability issues.

But (strangely) it doesn't deter 'Joe Public' from jumping in with both feet & buying them!

Your looking for Utopia (if I might say) in you car 'requirements'.

I doubt if you'll ever get your needs met at the car buying 'bottom end'.

Up/Citigo/Mii are aimed at Mrs average Housewife who needs to do a bit of mid week shopping, go to the Women's Institute Meetings & occasionally pick the young Grand Kids up from school.

Oh, and they never go to the Garage to Fill Up on those germ infested Petrol Pumps, no, their Hubby does it every weekend.

I know this through experience, don't ask me why!

Although I drive a Audi TT & have a MX5 in the garage for summer use, I confess I do enjoy driving these little 'skateboard' cars around, much fun!!!!

I just got rid of my last little old lady / gentleman car for going to the shops wearing a top hat and Santa pod with a baseball cap at a jaunty angle to blow off

supposed Hot Hatches, so you could have your cake and eat it with a Fabia vRS.

You could do 22 mpg or up to 60 mpg depending on what trousers you were wearing, elasticated waist band and velcro shoes or showing your pants and laces untied.

As a positive balance to the Anti ASG gearbox rhetoric which seems to be promoted by a limited number of members on here... many ASG owners believe the ASG (although not perfect or in league of ZF 8HP or DSG) isn't the scourge of Satan being portrayed ...

Our Citigo ASG is just 3 years old and has covered 54,000miles......... Faults NIL & Breakdowns NIL. It's very capable and in 4th to cover 112mph (speedo) which a great autobahn ratio. It also is blessed with shorter gears than the manual Citigo so getting off the line wit the 75PS is more engoyable and eager over super tall ratios. The main issue is people are too used to traditional automatic gearboxes with features like creep etc... On driving the ASG... yes it is different... the actual change may appear slow ( not glacial) but after a good couple of days a competent driver will be used to the mph/gear and adapt the driving style and understand the engineers development of the engine/gearbox.

A quick test drive would never win someone over and negative critique would be the usual outcome, just like with silver spoon Journo's of automotive publications.

Couldn't agree more Citigouk. People do tend to judge them quickly. I went ot Wales in one, a total distance for the trip of 630 miles on some very up and down roads carring a very heavy load. It coped admirably. Ok, so they are not the fastest changing auto, not built for speed but they do work well and if hurried still gives a good account of it's self. But hopefully a new dsg model that may be in the pipeline for the Citigo will alter things quite a bit.

Driving up a carriageway is not an issue, slow witted ones ini towns with a City Car designed to be a City Car is an issue.

Well for some that expected better from the 2nd biggest car manufacturer in the world trying to be the No.1.

Any gearbox or Automated Manual, CVT, Servo Clutch etc can be adapted to and there have been some crap ones in the last 4 decades,

but Toyota, Honda, Volvo, Renault etc addressed the issues, maybe Daimler Mercedes / Smart failed to, and the VW Group just never bothered.

Euro 5 vehicles, a new Small VW Group model getting the VW / SEAT / Skoda badges and they just signed off something acceptable and which you have to accept as not 'top of the class', not even above average.

I think that 1st. gear isn't tall at all. Engine pulls so nicely at low rpm so no need to slip the clutch.

Yes, I have to say that the first gear on the models I have driven didn't seem too tall. The Greentech is a taller gear but I didn't feel you needed to slip the clutch anymore than normal when moving off.
