Im new to this forum, i drive a nissan primera gt and im part of the primera owners club. i just purchased a Group N Felicia and im in desperate need of help. It was bought in 95 and rally prepared for the skoda trophy, it was then re-shelled into an "X" plate shell and continued to rally, Running pretty good spec Its in pretty good condition as far as a rally car goes however im concered with the engine. It is a touch smokey wen sitting on ide and there is some white emulsified oil on the bottem of the oil cap. Ive not had time to run engine comprsions test but im hopeing its not the cylinder head gasket. could anyone help me out with a few questions?

What oil does the engine run?

What oil does the gearbox run?

Do all 1.3i engines sounds grough and very aggresive on idle or is it just mine?

Where do you prefer to sit the rear on axle stands, ive got it sitting on the rear axle(next to the anchor points for the rear beam)?

According to the trusty Haynes Manual:-

Engine Oil: Multigrade engine oil, viscosity SAE 10W/40, 15W/40 or 15W/50

Transmission: Gear oil, viscosity SAE 75W/90 (to API GL4)

I'm running a Diesel Felicia so havn't got a clue about the noises a 1.3 should make and I havn't dared to put it on the axle stands yet.

There is no timing belt.

The cam itself is located in the engine, it is driven directly by an untensioned chain.

Eventually as the chain and sprockets wear, the chain rattles. If you leave it too long after, it does a chainsaw job on the engine. you replace the chain itself along with two sprockets.

mayo in the oil cap can just be condensation from sitting around a bit. I've had that with the rally cars. The engine at idle should have a small amount of rattle from the top end, the tappets etc, but other than that should be smooth.

Timing chains rattle on very noisily for a long long time. But as they apporach the end of their life they effect the running of the engine by swinging timing as they go :D.

Smoke when Idling could be valve stem seals etc as well.

If your cars running rough on idle its not running right. Regular suspect is an airleak on the exhaust side. sometimes just taking off the system and replaceing the inlet exhaust gasket and then tightening everything up helps. Sometimes the throttle bodies are a bit worn. Sometimes all they need is a good service. Hard to say without having the car in front of me. But these cars are very good at making a minor exhaust leak seem like a fuelling problem, due to confusing the lambda sensor.
