2012 Vrs Water pump Leaking

Recommended Posts

Had my Vrs 2 weeks and after a 500 mile drive home I've discovered a coolant leak....traced it to the dreaded water pump leaking:( as it its dripping onto the belt.

So I'm looking to replace the pump and belt however has anyone used non OEM parts? If so can they recommend any? My car had the engine replaced under warranty to the newer version in 2013 so I'm guessing there's the possibility that they didn't change the pump?

Skoda quoting £360 for belt and pump but no mention of labour.....what's your thoughts guys is it worth changing it with cheaper parts or is it the old cliche, buy cheap by twice?

Any info would be great, Thanks!

Where are you in Scotland and what Dealership?,

do not go to AC or Parks and sadly Henry's is now getting a rather poor reputation.

Double check that quote. Just under £500 might do it.

& it is Water Pump / Supercharger Magnetic Clutch, and as well to get both belts changed.

Only use Original VW Group parts and get the 2 year warranty they come with.

I will bump the thread with the part numbers and price of parts.

PS

I doubt they fitted a CTHE engine in 2013 if your car had a CAVE originally, did they tell you it was one with the latest parts?

Fixed price quoted on the Skoda website to replae cambelt, tensioner and rollers + waterpump on a Fabia or Octavia is £495 (£395 without water pump).  My local VAG specialist is carrying out the same work my 2012 Octavia vRS for £120 less (£375).

Yes,

but Techs just love doing a 1.4TSI Twincharger Water Pump which is a top 10 PITA.

http://skoda.co.uk/owners/service-and-maintenance/simply-fixed

At least when you know what it is and there is no diagnostics to be done because of EPC warning light then there is a set time for the job.

Mickmartin,

i take it that after your post on removing the Supercharger casing you never did that.

?

Did you buy a car privately and not from a Dealer of any kind where you even got 3 months or even 30 days of a warranty?

Thanks all.

Yeah mate I bought the car privately and had a lovely 10 and a half hour drive home form just outside Bournemouth so no warranty unfortunately. I may have got mixed up on the dates of the engine replacement but the paper work is there to show Skoda replaced it after just over 10k , Cars now at 37k. I'm in Greenock mate so I've phoned Linwood Skoda, Parks & Henrys with the water pump quote coming in at around  £190 fromeach of them however eurocarparts only want £170 for theyre version. The mechanic I use reckons around £300 he'd do it for but there was no mention of replacing belts. As far as I knew I thought it was only the pump and belt that needed changed, Is it advisable to get it all done?

I never did remove the supercharger housing as I read too many negatives to see any real point in it.

I'm absolutely loving the car lets hope this first problem is one of very few.

Any change you could get your car to Ingrams to have it done.

Or take a day up to Perth or Dundee and have it booked into Skoda Specialist cars John Clark while you have a few hours in the City.

Do not let anyone that has not done one before near your car to do the work.

If they are not clear what the car is and the Twincharger bit and not just a Fabia waterpump be warned.

PS.

Need to check the reg number,

but your car looks pretty much like one i went to Linwood to check out over a year ago i think for a member right down south that travelled up to collect it and then took south. lol.

It is not a Scottish Reg is it, i seem to remember the one i looked at was sold by Ingram Ayr.

Thanks bud,

The previous owner had it for 3 years before I bought it but I'm pretty sure this cars spent its life down south, "SV61 UMZ" is the plate.

My mechanic is pretty well drilled however reading previous topics there seems to be a debate whether you actually need to change the belts? I know its a belt off job to change the water/coolant pump so its probably worth it on a 6 year old car to be fair.

I can be at Ingrams in less than an hour......Pretty well reviewed and trusted by the guys on this forum?

Pretty sure it was up here after being first registered in Aberdeen & going south, and then was it not Arnold Clark that had the new engine fitted by someone else?

Maybe Ingrams fitted the engine.

Might be mixing it up with another one though.

So many up here that were the same and First Registered as Demonstrators.

As long as it is a good one now, and the water pump will be the original so once changed you are sorted.

Best change both belts just in case new ones were not fitted at the engine change & they are not expensive anyway.

?

Have you had the Spark Plugs changed, and was the DSG done under the Service Campaign?

Sticker in the Spare Tyre well with '34F7' on it.

I'll check the paper work tonight and let you know , I vaguely remember seeing that the last owner paid 10k in a garage in "Meadstone" somewhere, Not sure if the guy was giving me his best speech trying to sell it but apparently this was ex demonstrators, not read into it but  came with the climate control, armrest and black grill?

I'm learning more about these cars everyday!

Pretty sure i have driven it a few years back for someone that wanted to buy it, maybe it was me...

Looking through emails and pics but i have had lots lost when hacked.

Anyway, would have been treated with kid gloves if i was driving and would never ever have remapped it while seeing how well it could go...

Unless you are buying 12 months of Skoda Warranty (which does not always cover the water pump anyway.)

Using a AC or Parks workshop is just toooo riskyyyy. & as for Henry's recently they seem dodgy.

I fully trust the Master Techs at John Clark Skoda as they are very familiar with Twinchargers & Ingram have had enough in over the past few years to be trusted IMO.

Did either of the service desks you spoke to realise it was a 1.4 TSI Twincharger, and it will be 2 belts if you are changing them, and it is not a standard Fabia Water pump replacement?

Not so sure that they did and have checked out their pricing.

After  a week of getting part numbers and quotes.......Hide your eyes! I'm opting to buy the parts myself and take it to a local Vag mechanic.

I really cant justify(being Scottish) Ingrams price of £457 for a few hours work and in that few hours they couldn't guarantee me how long the pump replacement would actually take, I gathered it was 2-3 hours but again they couldn't guarantee it.

Ingrams wanted £191 for the pump which I can get for £123 and £45 for the 2 ribbed belts which I can get for 17 quid, Call me tight but I'm saving a £100 quid on parts alone before they're ridiculous labour charges and albeit they have a good rep on here.....I feel most mechanics will be capable of doing the job satisfactory?

Should I prepare for a barrage of oh know you shouldn't ? Be nice lol.

Ask the person doing it if they have done it before, if not do not let yours be the first.

If they can assure you they can do it and just charge the price quoted, 'whats the worst that can happen?'

The Master Tech as Skoda Specialist cars Dundee has done a fair few, no issues to him.

£188 is the Pump price including VAT @ 20% from a Skoda Main Dealer.

Amazon will be supplying the pump as there's a few company's on there selling the one with the part number you provided? Is there a difference between tsi and cave/cthe water pump? The same part number seems to correspond with both tsi and cave/cthe engines from what I can see.

That's both belts for 17 bud, I have know idea which brand would have been supplied from Ingrams etc...... but the ones I priced were Bosch and Continental, pretty reputable brands.

I provided Arnold clark with my Vin when quoting the  part numbers , Ingrams never asked as they done the checks from the reg.

Have a squint on the description on that part, I believe its the correct one.

Well it happened!

After filling the car constantly with coolant and noticing it was getting considerably worse I was 30 miles from home on Saturday when all hell broke out, EML starting flashing every time I accelerated with loss of power and shuddering then immediately the EPC light came. Had to nurse the car home, really struggled at traffic lights etc with accelerating and took forever to get to 60-70mph on the motorway but I made it.

Took the car a quick run around the block yesterday, within a few hundred yards EPC light was back on and back to chugging and spluttering, Water pump should be here within the next few days however one of the replacement belts have been delayed until September.

Hopefully all will be sorted soon.

Got my car back today.....£257 all in for parts and labour.

Diagnostic machine was showing it was misfiring, Could this have been caused by a faulty pump?

Strangely when I drove the car today approx 1.5 miles to the garage only the EML came on and not the EPC light before having the new pump fitted, All faults have been cleared and no lights on the dash.

Heres hoping all is well, thanks for the help folks it's truly appreciated.

Yes misfire could have been caused by the faulty and also then the Turbo gets inhibited.

The last vRS i had with the water pump changed was all OK, and then someone used the Cruise Control and then the EML came on and again misfire codes were showing.
