@captain_crunch - It looks to me like the locking pawl is engaging the wheel/column in a different place. Did you remove the ring that the locking pawl locks into when changing the components?

Actually, could you be more specific about what you removed, and what you changed?

Exactly.

@captain_crunch

Maybe you can clarify also what you call "gear steer". Preferably in better English.

@RicardoM - Actually, your last has given me an idea: for now let's just say that the only "gear wheel" I can think of in rack and pinion steering is the pinion wheel that engages with the steering rack.

I don't assume anything. It is OP's job to come with full repair details if he wants clear technical solutions. I've said it so many times, we don't have full access to the car. All we know is what an OP writes, sometimes in a few tormented phrases.

did you mean this part

@captain_crunch @RicardoM Well, this now looks to me like, at some point whilst the steering column was disconnected from the rack, the column was given a part turn, which has moved the slot that the locking pawl engages in away from the "straight ahead". Yes, that slot is inside "part 36" on the exploded drawing.

To fix this means stopping the car straight ahead, disconnecting the rack from the column, turning the column until the steering lock engages, reconnecting the rack, and then re-moving and refitting the steering wheel as close to ahead as the splines on the wheel allow.
