NEW RANSOMWARE THREAT

VWD

Recommended Posts

The IT blokes will possibly heard of this, but it's now being passed around Neighbourhood Watch as a warning. Whereas the old style ransomware was along the lines of encrypting your DATA ( easily cured by having off PC/SYSTEM  BACKUP), the new one takes a copy of your browsing history and threatens to post it on line if payment is not made.

Only cure suggested to date is to delete browsing history regularly.

I've also been looking on the web site www.howtoputyourwifeunderthepatio.com

I had an ex-colleague who after leaving the RN got a job with the DSS  investigating fraudulent  claims.

One bloke he visited insisted,  as it was a hot day, on conducting the interview/paperwork  out on his freshly laid patio. My ex-colleague even complimented him on his handiwork, and mentioned he was thinking of doing this himself, to which the bloke gave him hints and tips and things to be aware of, and so on.

A few months later, the blokes wife  was found buried under the patio*.

(*not my ex-colleagues!)

wHAT THE BIT ABOUT THE PATIO ?

The malware.

Sadly neighbourhood watch isn't very technical and usually behind on news.

I used to run a scheme at the old address, and I was 1/2 the age of the other coordinators and the volunteers sending out the alerts.

Typically I get alerts about a week after the force have already sent it by social media.

Good old fashioned extortion.

This was first  seen in 2010 from what I can read.

Pretty much business as usual for the internet.

Yup, just delete your browser history plus cookies or even better, use incognito mode!

I don't worry about my history being posted, I only look at cars + tech stuff anyway.................................and porn, loadsa' porn.

ccleaner  (unless there are good reasons not to use it? The "intelligent cookie scan" may be related to getting data from consumers using the free version, but it can be refused by doing a custom install)

I know how slow NHW is on cyber stuff, but this was a new one to me , so thought the likes of some porners (B)) might not have heard of it .
