Anybody driven a 1.2TDI and a 1.4 TDI?

Featured Replies

Hi, my wife currently has a 1.2 TDI Seat Ibiza (75hp) and is thinking about going to a Fabia 1.4 TDI (75hp).

Im guessing it's pretty much of a muchness as both small cc, diesel triples with low power but if anybody has driven both, is the 1.4 any better than the 1.2 TDI?  VAG didn't sell the 1.2 TDI for too long before moving to the 1.4 TDI and I'm guessing there must be a reason for that (discounting the older 1.4 PD diesel from pre-1.2 days!)

its fair to to say that I'm not expecting many (any!) replies to this post.

Sorry, only just seen this post. Welcome to the site a900ss. Yes, I briefly drove the 1.2TDI Fabia some while ago. I owned the earlier 1422cc pd engined 80ps engined car (which you are not asking about, I realise that). Vast difference between those two. But the new 1.4 TDI is also a great car and much better than the 1.2TDI IMHO. It delivers it's power in  a much better way. It has more torque. It's more eager than the 1.2 from much lower revs. As both those cars were loaners, I'm afraid I cannot comment further as I had them for such a limited time. Best to go and try one of each if you can. That's the only way really.

Just one other thing I would mention. After a lifetime of running diesels myself, I've converted to the 110ps TSI petrol engined Fabia. Mine has auto tranny and it's amazing to drive. It delivers it's torque much like a diesel engine and economy is not too far removed from a diesel engine. Cruising at 70mph it's revving at 2250rpm. Given it is cheaper to buy too, much faster than the diesels, I'd recommend taking a modern petrol engined car out for a test drive. They are very good now and I can get close to 60mpg without too much trouble on a run and without driving like my granny. Good luck and post back to let us know how you get on.

Thanks.

We've got a 1.2 TDI so I know that engine well. I even took it on a 2,500 mile Alps road trip last year.

Absolutely fine on the motorway but at low revs (as probably expected from such a small cc), it's lacking. I'm not expecting a ball of fire but if the newer 1.4 TDI is better, that would be great.

Thanks again.

I've just added an edit to my last post which you may not have seen, concerning the petrol engines. Have you driven one of the TSI's yet? Gives the best of both worlds. Good diesel like torque, better performance than diesel, and near the same economy under many of the same conditions.

Thanks. I've always avoided small petrols due to too high cruising RPM's (therefore not relaxing enough) but 2,250 @ 70mph is 31mph/1,000 rpm. Very similar to the 1.2/1.4 diesels @ 32.5/1,000 rpm.

Thanks again.

And forgot to say, the 110ps TSI produces 175nm of torque at 1400rpm.  Pretty good and much lower revs than the diesels. Max power at 4600rpm to 5600rpm.

Even the TSI 90 with the 5-speed is pretty quiet on the motorway. The engine is spinning away relatively quickly, but it's such a quiet engine that you wouldn't realise if you didn't look at the tachometer. The noise is from the tyres and the wind, not the engine. The best thing to do is to test drive all the different options.

There isn't a diesel 1.4 75bhp.. There is only 90PS (89bhp) and 105PS (104bhp) in TDi format.. go for the 104bhp.. it's a second quicker on the 0-60 figures..

they probably are - I'd figure you'd want to go for SEL or SE at a minimum.. the S spec is pretty woeful really, especially for the money you pay.. wouldn't get it from a dealer - an online broker is probably the best bet brand new.. save a few grand that way.

I don't want one, i was just replying to the duff gen that "there isn't a diesel 1.4 75bhp" that you posted.

We live in one the highest places in England and go up Hartside pass twice a week....

When our golf had an 'incident' with a deer we had a little bluemo polo (1.2) for a week.

If it can manage Hartside without me (2nd car is a lotus elise) complaining, it's fine.

The Euro 5 1.2 TDI had defeat devices fitted and were cheating the emissions devices especially in the cold so are vehicle that VW Group want in for The Fix'

It would be good to know from anyone that had a 1.2 TDI pre Fix and then had The Fix done if the car was still so good to drive.

If the MPG or Performance is as before?

That is something for other sections rather than the Mk3 Fabia one, maybe the Mk2 Section or some other 'Fix' thread.

Hi,

I'm the OP and we have the 1.2 TDI and it was 'fixed' in the summer. It's fair to say that I can't tell any difference in driving or MPG. I 'think' it is doing a regen more often though.
