How to fix paintwork after Scratch and dent insurance claim

Featured Replies

I made  claim  with GAPInsurance Scratch and dent insurance.

I had one small scratch on car door.  The scratch was fixed and  everything looked ok , I was happy with that few months until Today.

I just noticed that the door looks terrible in very sunny day.

I cannot complain about it because after I have noticed it few months after claim. I have never seen my car  before in sunny day

Do you have any idea how to fix it?

Take it back to the place who fixed it, must be a guarantee on there work

The paint just looks badly marred/swirled (in my non expert opinion). It'll just machine polish out. I wouldn't bother taking it back. They'll just make a bigger arse of it anyway if that's the state they originally left it.

meguiares ultimate compound and lots of elbow grease will take that out

It's just micro marring or some call it holographic swirl marks. It's because the machine polisher/pad or compound used has been done incorrectly. It will polish out with a less harsh pad or polishing compound. Whoever polished the scratch out maybe pressed on too hard or used too harsh a compound. The problem you may have is that paint is only so thick and if they have taken too much off then you will have to be very careful or you will go through the top coat and damage the base coat.

That is typical of damage done to paintwork by power polishers. You see so many cars on the road that have been totally wrecked by ham fisted idiots who pretend to know what they are doing. We had a 3 year old Mondeo that went to the local Ford dealer for warranty work and came back so bad that the only fix would have been a full respray. But we were lucky, we used the damage as a way to get a new motor for a lot less money than we should have paid.

You need to report it to the Gap insurance company, your contract is with them. They should sort it for you since its their repairer who has cocked up big time.

But best of luck sorting it, to me that looks permanent short of a respray and the door will be a different colour since Red is one of the worst to match.

/\ this!

I would not want them touching it again if that's how they left it the first time.

If I didn't have the skills myself I would be asking on here it someone local wants some beer taken to sort it. Shouldn't take long.

The issue here is defo holograms on the paint work.

I would assume, if done properly the scratch would have been wet sanded, then filled with paint, then had the added clear coat and then compounded down to a smooth finish..

However the step that was missed looks to be using a very light polishing pad and fine grade Polish (chemical guys white pads and and Sonus SFX-3 for example) and then refine away...

My guess is it was probably done in a body shop under artificial light... Which is good... But a proper detailer will roll the car out into the sun.. As nothing shows up holograms better.

If not right.. Back in and lightly refine some more... Stop, re+check in Sun and continue / stop depending on the results.

Had my 15 plate a few months and when I bought it.. It was a cloudy day so it looked pretty good... But once the sun came out.. It's covered...

I just haven't found the time to take a few days off work to properly go over it.. And when I do... It's always windy or raining.

In conclusion, find a good local detailer and they should be able to clean this up for your and it shouldn't cost the earth....

All the best
