Engine codes

Featured Replies

Hello - my scout came home from the garage the other day after a loooong stay, and is barely drivable :( Mechanic says he's given up :( . So our own investigations into the problems started over the weekend, and we've found a very poor standard of workmanship, wires and pipes trailing about, bits missing and bits not connected, and a pipe jammed against the air conditioning fan preventing it from turning. Today we began with an examination of the old gearbox, which is in bits (just for fun), and the old engine, also in bits. Problem is, we don't know which engine this is or which engine has been put into the car because we've been told so many different things by the garage. The original engine broke down with a knocking noise and loss of power over a year ago, and the mechanic diagnosed catastrophic engine failure and said get a new engine. He told us one of the injectors was faulty and the block was full of diesel, and the pressure had cracked the head. He couldn't find an engine, so we paid £1500 for a reconditioned BMM engine off e bay. However when it was fitted it had no compression, so it was removed and returned under it's warranty, and some time later a replacement arrived, which when unpacked turned out to be an Audi engine...... so it went back and another one arrived eventually, which we were told was the BMM engine which had had no compression, but it had been repaired. At one point we were told this is the one in the car now, and at another point we were told the car's original engine had been reconditioned and put back in the car. Technically I suppose it doesn't really matter, as long as it's a BMM and has no major issues, which is what we're trying to figure out. So, feeling like the total amateur I am, I have a question - where the heck is the engine code located on the block? There are lots of numbers and codes stamped on both engine blocks and heads, but none that we can find starts with BMM!

Engine codes are normally on a sticker stuck to the plastic timing belt cover. I don't know where else the are if thats missing.

Check in the front of the engine block on same location as marked here on the rear side

There is engine code together with engine serial number only stamped in, therefore it is usually corroded out and hardly seen
