Octavia 2 FACELIFT 1.8 tsi motor start from cold strange sound

Featured Replies

Hy there,

Recently I have bought a Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI. When starting from cold the engine makes a noise for 1 second, after the engine runs normally. I attached a video to hear the noise. It's not the same car but it's the same noise. There is any solution to this?

I don't want to alarm you unduly, but noises from cold are potentially fatal for these engines. It could be the chain tensioner about to fail. I would suggest you get it looked at by a expert immediately.

How often do you hear this start-up noise, is it almost every day?

The chain tensioner was changed at 60.000 km Now it has 107000 km. Every time when I'm starting from cold it's the same sound.

To get yourself know better what's happening,I suggest you go tomorrow at a specialist and have a discuss together with the history of the car..

But strange is this noise from the fact the chain and tensioner were (well?) replaced...

What oil is used?

In the car historic is used G1 service interval with VW50400 oil. Since I have the car it was changed wirh 50200. Better I think I must go to Skoda and make clear all the car historic about this.

Quite simple noise, starter motor one way clutch getting slightly stuck, not chain tensioner. used to be quite common on mk4 golfs and mk 3 golfs. u can either live it or change starter motor.

If it was chain tensioner then i would be like a bag of bolts rattling until oil pressure was built up, that noise isn't.

Do you know Part Number of that tensioner? And, was the main chain (not that one for oil pump or balancers) replaced too? If you have VCDS or any other scanner, check on idle engine, measured values on engine, group 93, field 3 and let us know.

I will check the values and post then here. From other forums I understood that some models have this problem from 0 km and might not be a problem, but for me it's a little strange

+1 for starter motor issue.

As said earlier, it's not  a chain tensioner issue, wrong kind of noise, loose, worn  guides and tensioner's sound like a bag of bolts or ball bearings rattling. Changing the chain tensioner and guides will not solve it

It's a starter motor issue, probably clutch dust has found it's way into the one way clutch causing it to stick slightly, either live with it or change starter motor, and as said was/is common on MK3 & 4 Golfs and MK1 octavia's

I understood now. Thank you. About the replacement  Rayx the parts are:

06H103483D, 06H115418D, 06H103483C, 06H109210AG, 06K190158AA (chain), 06K109467K, 06H109257C, 06H121131C, 06J903133A, 06J903326. These are the codes from the parts

I see correct parts fitted, 06K190158AA (chain) and 06K109467K (tensioner), so timing should be safe, never heard of failed K tensioner. Was not sure about that sound, videos often give some "distortion" so can be tricky to diagnose. So very likely the starter as Julian wrote, but should be safe when engine starts OK.
