Useful tools to have

Featured Replies

Hi.

I recently bought my  2015 Scout, having had a Hyundai Santa fe for 6 years. During that time i amassed a fairly large set of tools that could be used for most minor jobs on the car, Oil changes, Brakes etc.

This kit has fairly widely available items, socket sets etc, however being totally new to Skoda my question is, are there any unusual tools that will be needed to do DIY stuff in the future, ie allen bolts, torx sets etc.

I am thinking on the lines of brake disk and pad changes, are the caliper bolts standard, allen or torx, and other minor DIY stuff. Any hints will be welcome.

Thanks

I recently had to have a wheel changed (flat tyre). The AA man had to use a soft hammer to knock the wheel off, he said that alloys tend to jam due to corrosion

Hmmmm. After you have bought a Skoda, you can sell the tools you have; it isnt needed anymore  :-)

More serious: Torx T20 & T25 is something you find a lot of on VAG cars. And I dont know on newer cars. but on the older VAG you needed 7mm alien key for the front brakes (yes seven!!! not six or eight)

You will need spline bits to remove the seats and the bonnet. Possibly used in other locations as well.

Which Halfords only sell as a complete set...

Got mine from ebay as a single bit.

I'd do the complete set of XZNs. I suspect the oil filter has a 30 or 36mm hex on the end, haven't touched mine yet.

VCDS reader and fault resetter are more than useful; torx is essential.

Alloys corroded in place is completely normal, I'm used to having to kick them off, especially in spring.
