Is the alarm / immobiliser on my 2013 mk3 Octavia SE  Thatcham approved or not?  It's a question I'm asked when getting an insurance quote.

Hang on, are you sure?  Thatcham doesn't approve OEM alarm and immobilizer systems anymore that I'm aware of. They only approved aftermarket (given manafacturer didn't offer any security back in the day) alarm systems, like Cobra, Clifford etc

I don't doubt they still do but I can't see them approving or reviewing the security on every single model of new car. It might be the equivalent of a thatcham cat one, but that doesn't mean it's approved by Thatcham the body.

 

Thatcham is a bit of an antiquated approval body given that all cars since 1997 have to be designed with a the equivalent of a cat 1, but your insurer website should know that automatically when you put the reg in.

 

I would call them as I always answer No to that question. When in doubt, check. You know what insurers are like. Any excuse to wriggle out.

I usually reply  " As fitted from the Factory "

You usually get an option for Manufacturer standard fit or something along those lines.

I used to work there. 

They still check OEM set ups to make sure they meet the required criteria

 

Category 1 has to meet a certain criteria as does Category 2 and so on. 

 

These criteria were originally set by Thatcham hence "Thatcham" approved

I did a bit of reading. So it's UK based financed by the insurance industry, but they don't set security standards for manafacturers. They just review the standards of new OEM cars security, classify the category and report on it for insurance purposes?

 

 

What I don't get is why they ask if they have the details of your car. If it's modern then it has to have one given European manafacturer standards.
