Octavia DSG keeps returning to Normal Mode

Featured Replies

Hi, just taken delivery of a nice 1.4 TSI 150bhp DSG Octavia.  I always drive in ECO mode, on my previous 1.6 TDI DSG model the DSG would stay in ECO mode after a restart.  On the new car it keeps reverting to Normal mode after having driven happily for several hours in Eco mode.  Is there a way to force the default gear to Eco?

I found the same on mine, I took it as a useful feature to stop the engine from revving too high when the engine is cold.

Nope it will always start in drive/normal, you can change it immediately into another mode.

I wouldn't advise Sport before the temp is above 75

Fairly certain my RS starts in whatever mode I left it in last.  I find the OP's situation to be odd.

Having said that though, it IS a different car/engine, so perhaps the smaller units are programmed exactly as themanwithnoaim suggests, until up to operating temp.

Nope its a standard feature of the DSG, its not the mode that changes just the DSG setting, on start up you'll be in the same mode only D will display on the dot matrix.

Even does it on my new vRS245

I mainly leave mine in ECO and that is the more it starts back up in.

But in ECO it is likely to rev less than any of the other modes, so I could understand why it may not be allowed to restart in sports, mine will restart in eco which it is in 90% of the time.

Ahhh.... sorry I think there's some misunderstanding here between the 2 methods of engaging "Sport" mode.

By "mode"  I was meaning the driving setting that can be selected in the satnav screen when hitting the vRS button above the gearshift.
Therefore, Sport, Eco, Normal or whatever else is available.

My response meant that when I select something there, the car will stay in that setting when re-starting the car.

I think what you are meaning, is manually clicking down the DSG stick, to move from D to S "mode"..... something I haven't ever kept in S for very long, so I'm unsure if it stays selected when switching off & then restarting the car.

I have 1400, but 140 brake,2014mod year. this is run 99% in eco. set in car mode .  I tend to use sport for over taking like F1 Lewis . but that just a quick pull on the lever. Always restarts in eco. returns around 53 mpg. less on motorways - note to self must drive slower.

I have noticed that on my FL vrs I have set my Individual mode to Drive = eco and DCC = comfort. For some reason I start my car and even though it says I'm running Individual mode the Eco setting is ignored and runs in Normal (shows D in display), although it engages all of my other Individual settings happily (DCC etc). If I re-select Individual again on the screen it switches the drive to eco. I figure it's a software bug as if it was engine temp related then it wouldn't allow my to enable it manually.

You are getting confused between the car mode and the mode of the DSG gearbox (which I assume you have as you have D in the display).

One is selected by pulling the stick back changing the DSG from D to S and back.

The other changes all other parameters like steering, DCC, etc by pressing the "mode" button or selecting in infotainment

They are two separate adjustments and not connected.

You are getting confused.... I am well aware of the "D" in the display and the D/S setting on the selector vs the Mode...

I am talking about the Drive setting under the vRS mode settings. In "Individual" mode you can customise the various aspects of the car, "Steering", "DCC", "Air conditioning", "Sound generator" and "Drive". Drive dictates the drive characteristics and the mode the DSG gearbox is in, so if set to Sports then I see an "S" in the display and it sets the DSG to Sport. If I set it to Normal or Comfort then it is "D" in the display and the gearbox is Normal Drive selection. If I set it to Eco then I see "E" in the display. This sets the DSG to Eco and impacts the DSG so that it shifts earlier and coasts when I take my foot off the accelerator. If I have Eco set then when I turn off the ignition and then re-start the car the DSG returns to "D", even though my Driving Mode Selection is still set to "Individual" and has Drive set to Eco, i.e. my DSG is back to normal. If I re-select the "Individual" mode again it sets the DSG back to "E" and I get the Eco behaviour.

Yes you are indeed correct, bit of bad phrasing

You can change the behaviour in infotainment but the gearbox always reverts to normal N for the next startup. AFAIK They all do that as standard mine does and all I have driven so far.

I don't change the drive setting in infotainment for that reason. It is probably why I have all but forgotten it did that. I don't use eco (lots of arguments for and against) and sport is easiest selected pulling the stick.
