Oil pressure light

Featured Replies

I have a 2012 1.6 greenline octavia, The oil pressure light has flashed on a few times in the last week, also the oil light that comes on when you turn the key does not come on. I changed the sensor today but I have not driven the car since. It has 94000 miles. There is no strange noises from the engine and the car is driving fine.Just wondering if it is the sensor (hopefully) or a possible oil pump failure?.

Orange oil can is oil level / level sensor.

Red oil can is oil pressure AFAIR.

Which oil sensor did you replace, the level sensor or the oil pressure sender unit?

Why have you not retested it since replacing?  Worried you might cause more damage if there is a genuine problem?  Only way to conclusively prove would be to get a oil pressure gauge to test oil pump pressure.

On my (petrol) mk2, neither oil light comes on when turning the ignition on without starting.

Edit: PS may want to review this and any other threads using the search. If you get a garage to test oil pressure they may be best to plumb something in for a length of time, to enable them to validate pressure WHEN the light comes on.

It may be a preventative idea to get the sump pick up checked and cleaned / replaced..

It was the oil pressure sending unit I replaced. I will get the oil pressure checked as soon as I can. The car has been driven about  500 miles since light first came on as it is used as a taxi. If the pump was faulty would there not be obvious signs at this stage like engine noise or something else?

Thanks for the reply.

Only when it all goes tits up get the sump removed and hopefully u have a blocked oil pick up if not then I'd be very worried :(

Yes, I'd also probably check the sump pick up for starters.    If it is an intermittent oil pressure supply problem, initially there may not be other signs but in the longer short term, like in the thread I linked it could cause damage fairly quickly. Likewise if it is a failing pump.

A gauge which can be checked when the oil light is showing a problem could provide some further re-assurance.  But if the sender has been replaced it only leaves wiring or the cluster unit.  Otherwise a genuine oil pressure issue.

Hi

I fitted the new sender and was waiting to see if that sorted the problem.

I have driven 500 miles since fitting and the light has not come on since.

Fingers crossed that was what the problem was.

Thanks for the replies guys.
