Hi I have a 2010 Octavia scout tdi 

There is exhaust gasses escaping from the engine it's been to the garage today they said it's the EGR COOLER how hard is it to change also does the transfer box and so on have to be removed to get access or can it be accessed from the top thanks 

i think i have a problem with my egr valve so searched google and youtube. looks like a big job on the tdi cr engine at around £1600 for a dealer. apparently its at the back of the engine at the bottom. drive shaft etc has to come off to gain access to the water cooled egr valve. but this is on the 2.0tdi cr engine ( my octavia vrs engine) not sure what yours is.

no i haven’t had it done. think i’m going to try to bypass the cooler part with a pipe or hose that will prove that’s my leak problem. just means the egr valve will not be cooled just like on most other diesels. if that works i’m going to remove the unit completely and blank the egr. already been quoted £69 to have the ecu software done when the egr is removed.

Just checked the confusing paperwork supplied by Skoda when they replaced my OSR Differential and EGR Cooler.  Total cost of job for both was 1200.  They lumped the labour costs together which was approximately £500.  A rough guide for the EGR Cooler parts is approximately £400.  I would say the cost to replace EGR Cooler would be around £600-700.

Did this on my last Audi. Bypassed the water cooling pipes with 22mm copper pipe and jubilee clips then deleted the egr cooler altogether with blanking plates. 

Had what seemed to be an EGR cooler leak (LOT's of steam in the exhaust after about 1 mile on cold mornings - probably due to a leak through the internal seals between the coolant section and the exhaust gas section - plus steady and quite rapid coolant loss!) after a prolonged (3hr) rolling road cell remap in 2014 (IIRC) - after considering various (expensive) options I decided to put some K-seal in the coolant, and, pretty soon, that stopped the steam and most of the coolant loss. Slight coolant loss started again about 18 months later and so I put in another dose of K-seal and that pretty much stopped the problem, although there was a very slight loss over time. Finally cured completely after a routine cambelt and water pump earlier this year when the place that did it (local Mr Clutch) showed me that there had been a slight coolant weep through the pump gasket. NO coolant loss and no steam since then :) .

 

Apart from cost of the cambelt and pump, the cost of "curing" the problem was less than £10 for two doses of K-seal :)

My 2010 Octavia 224k was overheating all the time garage changed everything even the head gasket spent 1400 now they saying my egr coooler is blocked up they have bypassed that now seems great would that cause any damage not having the cooler working
