Which wheels do you think?

Featured Replies

Ive been looking on various threads here, and found a few different opinions regarding wheel sizes. I was hoping i might get some more opinions before deciding upon which wheels to buy...

Currently running 17" Stratos wheels with Falken 215 55 tyres. Looking at either 19" Pheonix anthracite or 18" Cassiopea black as replacements.

As much as I think the ride is comfortable in my 190 4x4 (non DCC) it can be a touch boaty at times. Therefore I wonder, would the larger wheels make for a sportier feel? Do they have an effect on the handling? Does the chassis feel less floaty on larger wheels? How much difference would there be in the comfort stakes?

The larger wheels would definately look more sporty i think, and i have seen other Superbs on these wheels and they look great!

The 17"s will be kept for use in the winter months with winter tyres btw.

Appreciate any feedback. Cheers.

I have the 19" Phoenix and they are great - they look fantastic filling the wheel arch with low profile tyres. A lot of people say the 18" are more comfortable but I've not noticed much difference to the ride - maybe because the car has DCC.  (I test drove an S3 Sport-line with 18"s before I bought this one with 19"s)

I'm also considering the Cassiopeas. I bought the car with winter tyres but no rims. People on the German forum say they like them for winter. They look they would be easier to keep clean. There is currently a campaign for them on the swedish skoda website but they are still much more expensive than what you would pay in the UK or the rest of Europe.

If you were driving with DCC set to normal mode would you say there was much difference in comfort, handling etc between the 18"s and 19"s? (Or is DCC in comfort mode on the Sportsline more akin to standard suspension on the regular SE L Business estate version?

But yeah, the Phoenix rims do look awesome!

Cheers! I saw that too regarding the current campaign. I think they were around 2500sek a piece for rhe Cassiopeias. Bargains are few and far between here! Still, they look nice and must be easier to keep clean. Have yet to see them in the flesh here, but have seen Phoenix a few times and rhey look quality imo...

From my own experience the smaller wheel size does provide a more comfortable ride due to sidewall flex difference.  I use 18” Summer and 17” winter sets.  It makes no difference to the occasional floatiness of the car as that is due to spring and damper rates programmed into the DCC.  I now run with the DCC set in Sport all the time.  Normal is just about OK, but Comfort induces motion sickness in my other half.

Of course UK roads are rubbish due to poor maintenance which doesn’t help the situation.

Got the 19" Phoenix wheels anthracite on mine and the ride is fine in all modes.  Got mine set to comfort as I think it suits the car - Sport does firm everything up but not too much.

Worst I ever had was a Mondeo Titanium X Sport on 18" wheels, the suspension was as hard as a rock and you could feel your fillings rattle as you drove along!  Far far too firm a ride- some people really like this of course but it was too much for me.

A lot depends on suspension and of course road condition.

The 19's really make the car look good, especially when all cleaned up.  The two-tone anthracite is really unique and sets the car off.

Roads here are a mixed bag too, so we literally have to take the rough with the smooth.

Appreciate your feedback though, food for thought...

With you all the way regarding the look of those wheels. I parked next to a similar Superb with Phoenix anthracite recently and i was taken aback. The car with 19"s looked sportier and added a touch more class imo.

Have to say i find the potholes in my horrific, the 19 wheels look awesome but next time i wont be choosing them.

Hello!

Which model do you own if you don't mind me asking? DCC suspension or standard etc...

i have the 19" Phoenix in anthracite

they certainly compliment nicely with the Superb.

with DCC, the ride is more comfortable than the mk2 Octavia RS with the 18" Neptunes.

I'm in Normal mode most of the time.  occasionally i'd put it to Individual Mode, which i've configured to mostly sporty.

on long motorway trips, i set it to Comfort.

regardless of the wheels being 18s or 19s, it will b floaty in Comfort/Normal.

Ok, thanks for sharing. Nice wheels btw ;-)

Opinions differ fairly widely regarding comfort, so I guess the best thing for me would be to book a test drive at the nearby Skoda dealership to try some 18s or 19s.

Interesting to hear also about the suspension being unaffected, but I do wonder about the handling still. Is is likely to be a little sharper on the wider tread?
