Spacesaver storage

Featured Replies

Hi

Ive recently bought a spacesaver for my Skoda Octavia VRS 2015 petrol. Only issue I have is that as it wasnt standard on the car there is no space for it under the carpet!! Does anyone know if you can change the foam insert to one that will hold my spacesaver? I will state that this is a genuine spacesaver taken from a VW car.

Hi mate. Thats just the tools. I mean is there anything that the actual wheel itself gies into before being put in wheel well? Also mine has a foam insert in the well but unsure if that has to be changed. Will try get some pics so you can see what im tryin to say

My space saver sits face down in the well, with that insert inside the wheel. Nothing under the wheel, no.

.

You just need to remove the big polystyrene insert and the wheel then goes into the wheel shaped recess, as per the pic above.

Thanks both. Thats where i was confused if the polystyrene was able to be removed.

That looks a bit proud of the floor level. I have a "full sized" steel wheel and the tools insert sits deeper in the wheel imho. I just have the basic floor btw.

I've sorted a full size Gemini wheel as a spare to go in my car, when it arrives.  I'm told that the standard floor will not sit level with the full size spare in the well.  This is something I will have to figure out when the car's here and I can see the extent of the issue in the flesh.  Nothing's ever easy, is it .

Space saver fits nicely. Just need the insert now. £40 for a bit of polystyrene and cheap tools seems a bit much Skoda.....

Agreed.  It's cost me £42 from my dealer, ready to go straight in  with the full size spare when I collect the car.  The SkodaShop was £41 with p&p £4 so £45 altogether.

Bloody rip off really but its a main dealer i guess. Have to wait until i have a little so spare cash. Not urgent anyway. Glad i never paid for the wheel from them! £290!!

For the space saver?  I got a brand new full size oem 18" Gemini alloy for £200 delivered from Ireland!

@peterhardy yes just for the space saver!! Thats a bit extortionate considering i paid £40 for mine from a private seller. The tyre on it is brand new never used!

Sounds like you got a bargain!  I don't understand how you can buy the space saver complete for £100 with a new car but it's £290, nigh on triple, if you buy it later.

I really did. I live in Bham and had to travel to Huddersfield for it but it was a chance to test my petrol VRS on the roads.....safely haha.

Hi guys,

Thought i'd just continue on this space saver storage subject.

I've just picked up my ex demo vRS Estate from Maidstone Skoda and wanted to know if i'm missing some items from the polystyrene insert (looks like there should be a jack perhaps?) and in the side storage areas in the boot? Photos below. Should the high vis jacket be under the drivers seat or is that an extra? Mine isn't present. The umbrella is present under the passenger seat :) Anything else I should have?

@MeteorvRS Unless the original owner had the space saver as an option then you wont get the jack or other tools. As in previous posts the polystyrene insert is sold with the tools at Skoda and on the website. I found a space saver online. If you google it then theres a website that sells them for £125 or private sellers may be cheaper. Hope that helps :)

Thanks @MATTLUMBARD, very useful. I definitely want to get a spare for it. I notice I can get the same 19" Xtreme alloy that is already on the car for £220 which is very reasonable for an alloy wheel I think. Will this fit in the space with tyre though?

Any idea what should be in the gaps in the existing foam insert and in the side compartments in the boot? Should there be a high vis under the drivers seat?

full size spare 18" gemini with a butchered spare wheel kit foam in the well. It sits about 15 mm above the floor but its hardly noticable.

sorry about the unordered images but thats the way it posted. You can see the pics with the floor in. This was a brand new gemini ordered from R.O.I. i got it and the tyre for around £250 and the kit was £40. You have to cut a fair amount away from the foam to get it to fit.you could shape the inner part to fit the 12V pump but i t didnt want to cut too much so ive tethered it to the side.

@MeteorvRS when i bought mine from Volkswagon Stoke there was no tools in the foam insert. You SHOULD have the plastic grip to take off the nut covers, a compressor from VW, the crappy foam to fill up your tyre, the towing bolt and some thin metal tools which im not sure what are used for (im as far from a mechanic as you can imagine haha). Other than those i didnt get any other tools or hi vis. I may have been short changed i dont know. Its so annoying i wish they would just make it a law in UK that ALL cars have to have at least a spacesaver.

I believe that a 19" alloy will fit to a certain point but there will be some part that sticks out from what some people have said.

Pics very useful.  Thanks!  I collect my car tomorrow and have bought a full size 18" Gemini too.  I thought that the spare wheel tool kit and it's polystyrene housing was supposed to fit inside the wheel without alteration.  The kit I ordered says it's only for the vRS so perhaps there's some difference with a standard Octavia one??  Cheers!

it will fit inside the space saver but not the alloy without some modification, it only took about 10 mins.

not a great image but you get an idea of the depth of the wheel and how far it sits out of the well. Its not too noticable with the floor back in place.

i don't think you would have any problems with a 19" wheel as long as the profile is 40 or less as there about 5-10 mm around this one. 225 is as wide as you can go really without the floor sitting too proud. A standard alloy and tyre should be OK either 18" or 19".

the foam insert wont fit over the center of the alloy so you have to take an inch off the bottom and chamfer the center of the insert (trickiest part) to go over the wider higher alloy centre without putting a large hole in the foam.

Good to know.  Neither my dealer nor their parts guy mentioned this.  Perhaps foolishly I just thought it would go straight in :crying:
