What would you do?

Featured Replies

Those that are mk2 Octy drivers will have probably seen the various threads of all the issues I've had with my VRS. It's been a fun car to drive, but man has it had issues.  I thought I had it all fixed, bar a small 'hiccup' at 2500rpm, which after having it remapped, it became apparent that this was a more serious issue.  The car will not map past 220bhp and is considerably under boosting according to the tuner.  I've been back and forth for months trying to resolve it, and now it's at the point where they want to take the turbo off to have it inspected by another company.  I can't expect this to give me much change of a grand so I'm at the point of getting a refund; I'm going back to collect the car tomorrow regardless.

So I find myself in the situation where I want to just get the car back, return it to standard and trade it in.  I have savings, but nothing set aside for a car.  What would you guys do? Get another 'cheaper' used car, where again, I'm running the risk of fixing problems out of warranty? I won't buy new, as it's just too expensive and a bit of a rip off.  What are peoples thoughts on PCP etc. on something like a Golf R or mk3 VRS?  I don't want a crazy loud boy racer car, but something of equal power to what I currently have is ideal.

I'm assuming my car is worth around £5k, but I reckon I'd probably only get £3-3.5k as part ex if I'm lucky.  WBAC valued it at about £3800 IIRC.

Has any reason been given why it won't map passed 220 bhp, who is doing the Map, is there just a lot of head scratching.

Very strange

It's been going on and on for months now.  It's not the tuner's fault that the car isn't running right, as it was there before the car was tuned. However, the fault has been amplified greatly since being mapped and the current train of thought is that there is a fault with the turbocharger.  I've changed DV, plugs, and coils myself, and had the tuner and another local garage check it for boost leaks - non can be found and currently it is still unknown as to why it's performing so poorly.  The car is using oil (~1L per 1500miles) and is getting on so I've decided it's time to just cut my losses and move on.  I'm going to politely ask Shark to remove the map and give me a refund (minus labour charges for their work so far).

A real shame, but it's daft to just keep chucking money at it...

Sounds like a nightmare, yep, as you say theres a time to stop spending.  Does the car take the Map and on paper it say's/shoews it's there but just won't drive past 220 bhp

Nope, it's peaking at 220 on the dyno, and the curves visually show the awful 2400-3000 stutter quite clearly.  With all the piston ring issues and the timing chain starting to stretch (according to VCDS) it's time to just get rid. Off to WBAC I think, as I wouldn't let anyone on here have it if I'm honest.

Hi mate, to be honest I agree that it's time to cut your losses, you could end up chucking thousands down a bottomless pit. Getting another cheap second hander private leaves you open to issues again. I got stung once and have stuck to dealers ever since.

On the what to do next note, you've seen my Yeti, it is a fully tooled up monster and the amount per month on a PCP is small compared to HP. I cannot comment on what will happen when it runs out but happy to have a chat with you on the blower about my experience if you want.

There are some cracking deals out there at the moment and some of the more exclusive stuff, (L&K, VRS etc.) are being offered on some awesome deals if you are happy to pay monthly which I always do. I've found that monthly gives me more of an option than emptying my savings for an unknown quantity. Plus you'll have a wedge to throw at the deposit which will bring the monthly down even further e.g. if I had only thrown £2000 at my current deal the payments would be around £140 a month for 3 years on a 3 year old car that had 26K on the clock and still almost smelled like new inside.

The other upside is that I can get a remap on my Yeti will make it VRS territory for around £500.

Give me a bell if you want a chat.

No help,  but daft to throw more money at it, but then it is always daft paying 'tuners' to tune cars not running right in the first place,

a proper running vehicle / engine is always where you need to start from.

Just get it back to as should be and use Mechanics and only Trained Mechanics or Technicians that do tuning.

Then they should know how to be sure an engine and the rest is fit for tuning.

Different engines, same warning though, don't try turning a pigs ear into a silk purse before the Vet does a medical on the pig.

Yeah lesson learned. In hindsight, I thought I had take all precautions to make the car ready for a map, but obviously that small issue that I thought could be mapped out was obviously a lot more serious.

Car is back home, with map still on and is running about 225bhp apparently.  Oh well, time to start pulling bits off to sell and off to WBAC.  I might list it here on the cheap but with clear, honest disclaimer.

Sounds like you've lost faith in it now anyway. Probably a good time to move on.

More that it would just cost more and more to get it back to full health.  It's drinking oil a bit quicker than I'd like (albeit within VW/Skoda) and this power issue is no nearer to being sorted...
