Bluetooth and texts

Featured Replies

I have a 2017 SEL Exec with Columbus (?)

I have a new business iphone (6SE) and my own Samsung Galaxy Core Prime (a year old).

I can read texts from the Samsung on the Columbus screen over bluetooth but not the iphone . . . .

Is this a standard problem with Apple?

My personal opinion is that it's a standard problem with Android, not Apple. The driver should be looking at the road when driving, not reading onscreen SMS messages.

SMS is only supported on iPhones when connected to CarPlay which requires a USB connection. SMS messages are read out loud by SIRI but not displayed on screen. You can also send or reply to an SMS by dictating.

100% with you there - any sms capability should be blocked the moment the car starts moving

If Apple really had that approach they would not let you connect with a car at all, any phone use is a distraction.  My feeling is that it is a mismatch between the Apple bluetooth application and the car's bluetooth.

Sometime I will try plugging in the i-phone in place of the I-pod with the music loaded (Not enough USB Connections!) to see if it works but I am not going to do this every time I get in the car.

I agree with the point about reading from the screen when driving and limit use to when stationary.  As I will not handle the phone when driving it means I have no access to texts on the i-phone until I stop.  My phone use is limited to short calls (e.g. "Will be home in an hour" or "I will be late") anything requiring much thought or concentration waits until I can stop somewhere (yes - it ****es some callers off).  In the early days of car kits I missed a turning when on a call and didn't recall most of the route I had driven while on the call.  Since then have limited what calls I will make when driving - there is always somewhere you can stop for a cup of coffee!

As this is the first car with the text facility the wife has  learned from experience to call me rather than text if it is urgent.

When I first connected the iPhone to the Amundsen via bluetooth, I am pretty sure there was the option for messages as I was surprised to see it there. Mainly use CarPlay but find plugging the phone in a PITA especially on a series of short trips, decided to look at possibly using bluetooth in these circumstances but the message option had disappeared. Not sure if it was a SW update on the Phone or dependant on which bluetooth profile it uses when connecting but it was definitely there, I didn't look into it further at the time but will again. I am definitely not confusing this with another phone e.g. android as one has never been connected to the car.

Edit: Ok I was not loosing my marbles. Go to Bluetooth>Paired Devices and click the blue i and turn on notifications, I believe this will only show new messages received since connecting the phone but the message option has reappeared.
