027 to 096 battery swap

Featured Replies

It's getting towards that time of year when batteries start to fail again.

Mine has been playing up for a while, beeping on start and displaying an ESP error typical of a battery issue once or twice a week.

So I decided to bite the bullet and swap it before it failed on me.

This is where I found the car was fitted with an 027 type battery rather than the 096 that most sales sites suggested it should have.

My car is a fl 2010 vRS CR170 TDI estate for info.

So I'm posting this information to help others, as it took me a few Google hours to work it all out.

Details:

027 type battery dimensions

L = 240mm

W = 170mm

H = 190mm

61Ah and CCA 540A

096 type battery dimensions

(I fitted an E44 varta item, other brands and details are available, I wanted the biggest it would take)

L = 278mm

W = 170mm

H = 190mm

77Ah and CCA 770A

The 096 does fit straight into the battery tray of the FL VRS, please check your own car to ensure fit.

The main issue for me was that my existing battery jacket won't fit as it's designed for the smaller battery.

027 type jacket part number:

1K0915411A

096 type jacket part number:

1K0915411B

Hope this helps a few out.

As with all guide type posts, it's done at your own risk, OP accepts no responsibility etc etc etc.

Thanks

I just left the jacket off. The 096 has been great. No electrical gremlins or spurious errors since putting it in a few years back.

The Varta and Bosch are identical, seemingly both are made in the same factory and just have different labels put on.

i have change  the original battery, why dont start

sorry mi english

to what voltage should the alternator work to charge the battery and keep it ok?

cokegol

The battery should give around 12.6v with the engine off and around 14.4v with the engine running.

mine indicates 13.8 with engine running

That's a little bit low. Rev it slightly to see if it increases a bit. Maybe an alternator / regulator issue.

Also make sure the connections to the alternator, battery and earth points  are clean and tight.

Just successfully fitted a 096 battery on my 60 reg 1.6TDI DSG and wondering where you can source the battery jacket mentioned in the OP? I haven't had much luck googling around and was wondering if anyone has a good source?

I sourced the bigger jacket off eBay (new) with part number 1K0915411B

You should be able to get one from a dealers with that part number though.

I don't understand the previous posts about the battery jacket. The battery on my 2007 Octavia 1.9 tdi was down to 12.1 volts fully charged so I bought a Lion 096 battery, to replace the existing, smaller battery.. It fits straight in with the existing jacket, no problem and an easy job.

Later cars after the 1.9 TDI have a smaller battery.

I've just swapped my 027 battery for a 096 too.

Fitted perfectly however like the op, the original 027 battery jacket did not fit.

I'm undecided whether to order a 096 battery jacket, order the above battery box or leave as is.

I think the battery box looks better then the jacket in the engine bay

I agree. Anyone ordered one from Aliexpress before? Do you have to pay by credit card or on PayPal?

Try eBay might be able to pick up a bargain

The battery box should be available from your local dealer, although I am not sure of the part number. From what I remember my old MK2 2005 pre facelift had the battery box.

Good call, are these all the same size or is there a different one for the 027 and the 096?

It's what my 2008 has, just figured they were standard! Do they fit both sizes of battery,... have no idea what size mine is as still factory original 90k/9 years in but presume it'll be the smaller as it's a petrol.

Yes fit both sizes of battery as the battery is side clamped in place

I pay by CC.  Have been buying from there for years without any issues.  You don't pay until the goods arrive & you confirm the order has been received.
