Winter Tyres for 2WD

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just a quickie.

If you have a 4WD car, you fit winter tyres to all 4 wheels. But if you have a front wheel drive car, is it legal to fit winter tyres to only front wheels ? These would be on steel rims instead of alloys and I presume the same size tyre.

Cheers,

Lloyd

Not sure if it's legal but it wouldn't be recommended as you have grip from only one axle which could create some dangerous situations

Forget legal - is it safe?

4WD / 4x4's are a bit different from Part Time AWD's,

But the law or legislation EU / UK is interested on tyres across the axle & the Speed / Load Rating and tread depths.

So do as you wish if safe and you have insurance cover for the public highway,

and with Haldex check that out but the Winter or Snow Tyres on the front only will be for you to decide if safe or efficient.

Others do it with no problems, accidents or incidents and many would never do it.

OK,

That video is worth a lot of words ! Four winter tyres it is then !

  • 2 weeks later...

that video is rubbish as a comparison. the speeds and lines used to compare are totally different and why on earth would you fit the winters to the only rear of a FWD

its not optimal, but there's no reason why you can't. but I personally wouldn't

I always fit 4 on the front wheel drive VRS. We take it up into the Scottish Highlands in the winter and have never been stuck yet. It has been sure-footed in some very wintry conditions.

Go for 4 for maximum safety.

I also just got 4 for my Audi Quattro. It will be interesting to see how that performs.

These are the ones I have just had fitted:

My local Kwik Fit place wouldn't fit winter tyres to my front wheels only. They said that that's now illegal & I would have to have them on all four wheels. I's a pity because many years ago I had a Peugeot 205 with snow tyres on the front & it would go pretty much anywhere. I could even stop on a snowy hill and set off again. The back end was a bit skittish though & I had to be careful.
