MK1 2005 VRS Blown Turbo!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

Long time reader & thanks to all those who've contributed to some tech guides - you've all been invaluable at times!!

I'm looking for some advice from the forum as to what I should do with my VRS which has, alas blown it's turbo (I know, common as muck!)

Basically, I'm looking at a new car which will have to be anything as we need a car for work as the repair bill will outweigh the value of the car.  Before I consider scrapping it I wondered if anyone knows roughly what would be a reasonable value if I were to fleabay or Gumtree it as is?  Only thing wrong (that I know of) is a blown turbo and it's a lovely spec'd car which I'd hate to see go to waste.

Comments welcome & Hi again!

Cheers.

Andy

I can't believe you're throwing this away for the price of a recon turbo, they're so cheap and the work is so easy to do. Where is the car located?

Hi. Midway between Swindon and Oxford.

I'm not mechanically minded apart from basics so reliant on local garage for this type of thing. Any bill over £1k is just too rich for me.

I'm gutted to let it go but the wife knows best...

Haha, priceless, I see you're already on the back foot, once you've given that much ground you can never get it back!

You're not wrong there! Haha!

Is it worth the effort advertising it as a non-runner and what do you reckon is realistic? I just want it off the drive now the replacement is coming Tuesday...

Such a shame you done live closer, id would have e put a second hand unit on for you, doesnt take much more than a few hours to swap a turbo over on the road side.

Thanks Stevo... Sadly it's the few hours labour that's pushed the bill too high unfortunately. My concern is that we don't really know what caused the turbo to blow in the first place. The garage reckons there might be a blockage somewhere in the exhaust that caused the pressure to get too high blowing the turbo up! So without a proper diagnosis, I'd be reluctant to just replace the turbo in case the root cause blows that as well! Like I say, the car is a good project for someone mechanically minded and I'd rather it go to an enthusiast than the scrappy if anyone knows anyone? Having looked on fleabay the seats alone are worth a few hundred quid...

Just put it on ebay with the above detail about the car no reserve for say 7 days

What you get will be the value of the car.

You're kidding?? Even a non-runner is worth a grand? Surely not...

Or you could join Freedom and advertise it on here. ;)

No chance. I paid £750 for a running Fabia vRS. Wouldn’t pay £1k for a non runner, blown turbo or not.

I thought as much...

If you think it'd be worth it I might consider that? At least I have more chance of reaching an enthusiast. Bottom line is that by hook or crook it's got to go *sob sob*

No brainer, there are several people on here that would be interested.

when you say its a lovely specc'd one, what bits does it have on it?

Nonsense, age and mileage alone mean certain death for any original turbo, nearly every VRS on here has had a replacement already.

I have a spare turbo taken off mine at 90k. I’ll be honest, it’s alwas a risk buying second hand rather than refurbed, but for £100 you would be able to keep your car?

Turbo is reportidly still in good shape (have pics and can take more) according to the garage that took it off and put the upgrade on?

I live in Bristol and do travel to Swindon to meet customer if that also helps?

It's completely original, not been mod'd or mapped etc. The Dr who had it before me from new basically had every option in the brochure when he ordered it apparently...

Heated seats,

Sunroof

6-disc changer

I'm not an expert on what was available back then but when I was looking I didn't see any others with all these bits. I think the only thing missing is leather and cruise control.

I added in a Parrott, but it's nicely placed in the centre of the console without wires dangling everywhere.

Would you be interested in selling/swapping your heated front seats for some non heated standard ones?

We've put a deposit down on a replacement (Peugeot ugh) that I collect Tuesday as we can't go without even for a week! Having said that, if I can get it running then sell it, I suppose it would make sense. What would a reasonable amount of labour be to fit it be?

Yes, having read a lot of threads that does seem to be the case. I do have faith in my garage as they've always been good to me over the years. But I do wonder if they lack the VAG expertise from the sound of it...

A couple of hours, maybe less for a good mechanic

I'll have a word with the garage tomorrow and see if there's anything else I've missed in the conversation. I seem to recall 5hrs being mentioned...

If the turbo has disintegrated they need more time to clean all the swarf out of the intercooler and pipework, even so I cannot understand how it's a grand, a standard recon turbo and five hours labour is about half that.
