What is it....

Featured Replies

What is the item that sits between the screenwash bottle and the radiator? Round cylinder with rubber pipes leading into the slightly recessed top. I seem to have a fluid leak as there is a puddle in the recessed top, car has only just been serviced and the garage said at the time there was no sign of any leaks anywhere so it has happened in the last 2 days since the full service.

Fuel Filter, Has the dealer changed the filter ?  Lookers?

Yes and Yes!

Could it just be the screws round the top that are loose as it does not seem to be coming from any of the pipes.

They also managed to set the service period back to fixed service from variable. Looks like a trip in on Monday to get that fixed.

Then they haven't replaced the lid/seal properly.

more like the seal is not seated properly, have they put the correct filter in ?  Worth checking the part number.

If the engine was washed after the service (?) then this could *just* be water, or more likely from over-enthusiastic filling of the washer bottle?

If the diesel filter housing is leaking, I would have thought it would run down the vertical sides of the housing, (and smell a lot) rather than filling the lid. The pipes on the top don't need to come off to change the filter (for me, anyway).

If it is leaking diesel, it can flick on to the auxiliary belt, which can rot and eventually fail, winding itself around the crankshaft pulley, which can cause the cam belt to fail.

So, might be worth keeping an eye on.

I can assure you Lookers won't have washed the engine ( unless you have asked them to )

It is defo diesel, took a look while it was running and it is bubbling out of the edge of the top, some is being blown back over the lip by the fan the rest is dribbling down the side to make a right mess. All the pipes are clean and dry.

Lookers did not wash the engine but I suspect they will have to now! On the safety check video I got sent  when they were servicing the car the tech said there was no sign of any leaks at all - can't say that now, its all over the place and a mess on my drive as well.

I think I'd insist on a new auxiliary belt, it only takes 2 minutes to fit.

There have been instances on this forum where the above has happened.

The large o-ring/seal is pushed down into the black-bowl-part, it sits in a rebate in the lid, I'd imagine it can twist whilst its being re-assembled, as it is a snug fit.

Hopefully this explains it a bit more.

The new filter hasn't been put in yet, in this picture.

Another vote here for asking for a new cambelt, it simply isn't worth the risk.

There is no excuse for screwing up the fuel filter change.

They have had the car all day cleaning it up - they had nicked the seal! Replaced Aux belt. I will see what kind of job they have done when I collect it in the morning. Gave me an Octy VRS DSG till tomorrow - fun to drive but not as comfortable as my Elegance - must be getting old!
