ASDA is quite handy, buy the correct spec in a container with ASDA on it, it comes from proper Oil Producers.

They sell the well known Branded OIls as well.

Local Motor Factors are good, COMMA OIls etc, maybe the same oil as comes in the ASDA Containers.

No point having Oil snobbery and paying the major oil companies advertising costs.

Couldn't agree more. Oil snobs are SO boring. So long as the oil meets the manufacturers specification for your engine, as laid down in your handbook for normal road use,  it will be suitable.

If you wanna spend 3 times as much..... You've been hyped.

Our local garage gets a 50 gallon drum of Comma  (one of the more budget oils)  and that's what you get whether it's a Mini or a Jag.

Most people can't afford £50 oil fills.

Why are Halfords robbers?

As above, if it says it complies with the correct VAG standard, then it does.

It's like medicines. You could buy supermarket brand headache tablets for 16p/pack, or a named brand made to the same licence number in the same factory for £2/pack.

Volkswagen Group do not manufacture oil do they, just buy huge quantities of it to use since they are the worlds 2nd biggest car manufacturer.

Maybe they have financial interests in the producers of Quantum & Castrol.

The biggest car manufacturer in the world TOYOTA with less warranty claims with their engines failing might be worth checking which oil producers oils they recommend.

French vehicle Manufacturers recommend TOTAL, maybe also they have financial interests in the company or just the French Government..

At the factory, you will probably find that the engine is filled with whoever gave skoda/vw the best deal for oil at that time, just like with the tyres.

Another option for oil buying is the halfords trade card.  You used to have to be a qualified mechanic or work at a garage, but now all these can apply

Some Comma oil is not VW approved, the wording on the packs are cleverly worded, cant quite remember what they say but it’s on the lines of Comma recommend this oil for VW spec use.

Look at Premium Comma maybe.  Obviously if oil is not to spec do not buy it. 'Simply Clever', know your specs.

It up to the buyer to check, and to see what the costs are.

What oil consumption?,

never seen any statement on that other than the 'May use 0.5 litres 1,000 km' May use more in first 5,000km.

& That is for every VW Group engine, 3,4,5,6,8,10,12 Petrol or Diesel from 44kw up.

JUST LIKE THE TYRES. And then I wonder as on my car, bought with the original factory FIT tyres, I found I'd had one sidewall damaged with local gulley drains. Tyre place was horrified to find that the OEM tyres were not man enough for the performance of my car.

But for oil, you may find that there's VAG SPEC oil on the shelf of most major supermarkets. Asda has 5 l of 505.01, at roughly the same price as Tesco sells 4 l for. Both oils are under the store name.
