2017 Motorcycle Live NEC, Birmingham

Featured Replies

Hi,

Has anyone been or is going to Motorcycle Live this week?

I am going tomorrow, Tuesday to 'throw my leg over' MT-03, r3, z300 and others so I can see how they fit me.

Getting a motorcycle seems quite likely now but probably wait to purchase until April when my 5 years is up on a  3 point endorsement.

Still be ready for the spring and summer and gives me plenty of time to book a return to motorcycling day.

Best wishes,

John

Sounds good to me!

@lol-lol is your man for the R3.

Im hoping to get there next weekend. Quite like the look of the Tracer 900 GT.. might persuade me to swap my Tracer next year  if i like it...

Plan to go Saturday AM to early PM.

I am 6ft 1" and the R3 fits me and is comfortable, much more so than an R6/R1.

R3 is pleasantly quick to 60, 80 or so, 0-60 is 5 seconds, oddly at 90/95 it suddenly stops accelerating with me but that is not a bad then when one needs a licence for one's job.

Already gone for the Delkavic slip-on, but that does nothing until the CAT is removed except look quite good.

Got a double bubble screen but really need a sports tourer screen as quite tall and only Zero Gravity do them and they are £90 rather than the £40 a paid for the Puig DB screen.

Rear geared mine with three teeth of the back sprocket and now it cruises at an indicated 75 mph with revs below 7k which is more relaxed than was.

Comfortable, cheap to buy, relatively, cheap to insure, very good on fuel, cheap road tax, happy days.  Oh and it one the sub-500 cc World Super Sport 300 Championship.

Bike i will drool over is the H2s............

Had an H1 many years ago and this mad Kawasakis are just unreal.  I would not go pillion on one.............

Ken S's 0-400 (almost 250 mph) kph in 26 seconds on an H2R.......

I was speaking to a salesman in the kawasaki owned dealership in Newbury the other week.

He was saying how some people compained the H2R was only getting 240bhp on the dyno instead of yhe claimed 310. Kawasaki took the measurements of their dyno room and said it simply wasnt big enough.

It uses 200 litres of air a second at full chat, so was essentially pulling all the air out of the dyno room and it was reducing the power.

Quite some going i thought...

That is mental power for a motorcycle, I remember what my Honda Blackbird felt like with I think the standard 186 bhp and that was stupidly fast for such a big machine!

Back trouble and the thought of having my licence shredded eventually prompted the change to an ST1100 Pan European lol!

Hi,

I owned a kh400 which could be a bit of a handful but nothing like a h2 500.

Next motorcycle is going to be a 4 stroke which is going to be my first non 2 stroke.

Touring screen is a must as like you I am over 6 ft tall.

I narrowed my choice down to z300, mt-03, r3 but the decision will be made by buying the best value *used *quality pre-owned maching.

Don't want the machine to be loud but want other road users to know I am there so a change to the stock exhaust is a  must do. Style wise I like the look of the twin ext Ixil but would keep the db killers firmly in.

Haven't come across Delkavic or Zero Gravity so going to do some research - thanks for your post!

John

Delkavic is a UK make, despite the name.

Zero Gravity, high quality perspex screen from California used by the US racing crowd.

I rode up to DK once and they have one of the largest stocks of motorcycles in the country, the place is a tardis inside.

Comments from Motorcycle Live - I would recommend everyone visit the Brough Superior stand - omg the bikes are a work of art.

SWM have some interesting looking bikes to.

I was hoping to see a few smaller manufacturers  such as Hyosung, Sinnis -  Husqvarna bought their enduro/  motocross bikes but I didn't see there 'Pilen' range.

Kawasaki oddly had their Z250 and 250 Ninja but not the 300cc equivalents which I wanted to take a good look at.

Quite a lot of biking gear, lots on offer.

Hope you enjoy,

John

They do but its probably among the most expensive too.  I test rode a Z1000SX from there a few week ago though and they were spot on.

Thought there was a ninja 400 now?

Hi, yes the Ninja is a 400cc now which they had displayed on their stand - larger machine than the 300 with 45bhp - because they have taken about 2000rpm from the rev range they have removed some of the zing and fun.

I guess my interest in small capacity machines started with the gt250/ rd250/ rd400 of the late 1970's, then the mad 250cc, 19000rpm, 4 cylinder bikes of the 1990's such as cbr250rr mc19.

Perhaps they are going to release z400 that's maybe why they had z250 not the z300 - they did show versys x 300 which confuses me.

Best wishes,

John

I’ll be there this Saturday with grr666

ah okay. 2k rpm lost? thats quite alot! Wonder why that is?

i imagine a z400 must be on the cards? it would certainly fit in with the range.

I went today. Quite like the H2 SX.. i know they obviously think its the be all and end all of high powered sports stuff and sports touring... but i couldnt help but notice it weighed 245kg. Needs to go on a diet.. surely...

wasnt much impressed with the Tracer 900 GT.. which i thought id like. Just cant get on with their lack of colour matching.. TFT screen is tiny compared to the other manufacturers and i just overall didnt like it as much as i thought i would.

Looks like i'll be keepin my 16 one for abit longer,,, unless a test ride convinces me.

Bet a 17 model will be going cheap soon mind....

Big fish now is he :D

Looking forward to tomorrow and catching up with a mate of long ago ie Nev, on the Moto Mojo stand 2C53, who I am guessing to Canada/US bike tours things.  Amazing guy, got half way round doing the Long Way Round until he had to abandon it when the floods hit his home in Canada.

Great respect for those, like Nick Sanders, who do this, not sure I will ever be brave enough etc.

Probably down to the panniers and extra fairing so comparable with its competition. They are never going to be a back road scratcher but then they're not designed for that either.  Kerb weight of 265kg, without luggage and pillion, I'd rather go for a BMW 1600GT  and get their in comfort rather than a bit faster.

Hi, I guess if they matched the 300cc power at 13bhp per 100cc the 400cc would output 52bhp which is way over the a2 licence power restriction.

Went to my local kwaka dealer today and sat on a z300 and it fits me quite well, looks like it's going to be a 'used'  z300 or mt03 in the new year depending on the price and quiality of bike.

At 245kg or possibly heavier for the k1600 bmw you think that anti-drop software would be a must, well they can do anti wheelie etc etc.

60 hp from 300 cc would be no problem going by the R6s having 120 hp and more but you need to revs to 14/15k revs to do that.

KTM cocked up with the first 390 as it was not A2 compliant without a restrictor kit which they have no fixed by making it heavier ie it is now within the A2 power to weight and has a good range on its new tank size.

59 hp from an RD350 YPVS a quarter of a century ago !

Would like a big bore kit for the R3 ie same weight but maybe 52 hp for 400 cc but these days there is just too much to change injector bodies etc.  In the old days we would up the carb size by 2 or 4 mm etc, rejet etc and enjoy.

Not much fun with such a heavy bike. I had a Honda Varadero of similar weight. Going to Germany on it fully loaded with the wife as in-experienced pillion when boarding the Hull to Zeebrugger ferry the front wheel came up on the steep and very greasy ramp. I struggled keeping the balance and wheelied all the way up the ramp in a zig zag fashion, the wife totally oblivious and still leaning back whilst I'm stood on the pegs trying to get as much weight on the front. Got to the top of the ramp and onto the deck when I finally managed to get the front wheel down again to the shocked looks of the decks hands who then applauded my efforts. It was pure fluke that I managed not to drop it. Big, heavy bikes are great unless things go wrong, then it's time for new pants.
