Start stop, 17978

Featured Replies

Had the error code about two months ago, 17978.

Fault was that when cold the engine start then stops inside 5 seconds, restarted and was fine.

Worse at the weekend.

Started in a car park, then it stopped and dash lights came on, the car was out of the parking place by 5 yards.

Started it again and kept the key turned so it would not stop so I could reverse into the parking place again and take a better look.

Next time ( and subsequently) it has started with no fault.

Do I worry, or should I be bovvered?

17978 -  immobiliser issue.

Couple of suggestions:-

  • Key - have you got a spare one to try?
  • Immobiliser ring around ignition lock - or a bad connection nearby

Thanks John,  I have a spare key to see if that makes any difference.

Sounds about right area to try.

Today, I had the ignition left on while I phoned and then started the engine, the same thing happened, start then stop and the restart keeping the key turned cleared the fault.
