4x4 and wheelspin?

I have re read this thread again, trying to figure out what is normal behaviour for the Haldex system on these cars. I get brief wheelspin pulling out of junctions on moist roads, with a bit of camber and reasonable lock, before it settles down. Its certainly nothing like the wheel-spin that I used to get on my Octy VRS on a brisk pull away, so I’m pretty confident something is kicking in to aid traction. Not noticed seeing any traction control light illuminating when that brief spinning occurs , though I’m usually concentrating on the road more than the dash, when turning out of junctions. :)

I wonder what others have experienced lately, with the 280, in similar situations?

Having had my new Haldex pump fitted, the system seems to be working fine. However I can still get brief wheelspin pulling away at a junction, but only with a lot of steering lock on.

It’s not as good as my Subaru was, but much better than when the Haldex pump wasn’t working!

Tested the 4x4 system after changing a parameter in OBD11 to something with increased traction - I read about it in another thread. A little bit surprised of the tyre tracks. Both sides of the vehicle hade the same ground condition - powder snow on ice. Looking at the picture only the right hand wheels started to spin (left on the picture). Tried both before and after changing parameter.

1. Normal start full gas - front wheel spin before rear activated.

2. Launch control - I think front wheels started to spin before rear.

After parameter change

1. Normal start full gas - front and back reacted at the same time

2. Launch control - Front and back at the same time.

What's weird is that our XC70 also equipped with Haldex 5 has a lot less wheel spin both in speed and also from start. Must be different calibrations of the Haldex 5!?

As soon as it detects the spin it will kick in the other wheels and the traction control should stop or slow  the spinning wheel, I think

I'm aware of how it's supposed to work. What I wrote was that by changing a parameter the way it works is altered.

Just came to think of that I had ESP in sport. That might be the cause of only right hand wheels spinning.

Good work confirming that there is a bit of front wheel slip built into the standard haldex map. Quite why is another thing though!

I think it's because of durability reasons. Volvo did get some criticism when they launched the Haldex 5 as it was a step down from Haldex 4 in performance. Haldex 5 just wasn't as quick in its reactions as Haldex 4 and allowed for wheel slip before engaging rear wheels just like Haldex 2 (maybe 3 also). Volvo listened and reprogrammed the unit to be fully locked at takeoff. I believe they made this change as the XC70 and it's likes are a popular choice (at least in Sweden) amongst people who also considers the A6 Allroad, Subaru outback etc. They simply can't afford to be "worse" then the competitors.

Skoda Superb isn't in that situation and doesn't attract the same amount of people who puts the four wheel drive capabilities in first place.

This last part just reflects my thoughts about why Volvo put some effort in it and who is considered as a potential buyer.

All sounds eminently plausible,

Adding my latest findings :)

Behaviour as described in my post above was indeed caused by turning of ESC to enable launch control.

When flooring the pedal with ESC on, gearbox in "S" all wheels are being engaged, it's a little delay because of the brakes being engaged etc.

Have any of you guys set the XDS to "Strong"? I did a while ago but I don't think I benefit from it as i tend to go really slow in the bends :)

In theory this function should decrease inner wheel slippage when pushing through roundabouts and sharp bends.

I have on my Superb and previous car. Noticeable difference when cornering at speed. Almost like the inside wheel is digging in.  Both FWD cars though.

I’ll be setting it to strong on my inbound 280 when that arrives, along with trying those different Haldex settings too.

May be a daft question @Penguin but is setting XDS to strong a VCDS thing? Don't think I've ever seen it in the menus - mine is also FWD only.

Yes it is.  VCDS or OBDEleven.

I can thoroughly recommend OBDEleven Pro Jeff.  Allows you to the basic stuff with a few menu options and without having to touch long coding, like some functions with VCDS.  Having seen both in action VCDS is obviously the daddy in the sense it is a more mature product, has much more functionality and has much better product support but just to set a few things on your own car or even just check fault codes and do the odd diagnostic scan,  OBDEleven isn't bad at all.   The good thing is that the controller modules (directory structure) is the same to navigate regardless so instructions you see for VCDS are the same for OBDEleven.

I've been seriously thinking about this one - my list of desired mods is growing, and I think most / all of them are pretty straightforward. In truth though I'm terrified of ****ing up the car (technical term:biggrin:) and not being able to get it back to where it is now. I think I may have to negotiate some beer vouchers for a couple of hours tutorial with an advanced user if I can find one in this part of the world. Will check the VCDS map thread. Thanks.

Are there any negatives having the xds set to strong?

None that I’m not aware of and speaking with a VAG specialist there’s little to no extra stress on components.

Just an update on this now I've a thousand or so km under summer tyres...and it's still the same.

Car has been into the dealer and there's no errors in the 4WD system so I guess that's just the way it is :(
